Audition EtiquetteNow, I would just like to post this rant about theater etiquette because I just find this appalling.
I just got home from auditions for the spring musical my high school is putting on. There were only twenty-five of us there (there are two audition days to choose from, so we were only half of the people auditioning) so we all auditioned in front of each other. Now, out of those twenty-five people, I was the ONLY person who remembered to thank my accompanist (he's really a spectacular accompanist, too, especially since he's only a junior in high school) and his page-turner (who I felt really bad for, standing around for hours just turning pages), and I was one of THREE people who remembered to volunteer to move the accompanist's piano back into the music room, which is a lot harder than it sounds because it's a heavy piano and hard to maneuver around the doorways.
I understand that this is high school, and that for a lot of people this was their first-ever musical. But theater etiquette should be the first thing you learn in theater! Those are some extraordinarily basic mistakes, and I was appalled! What's worse, I know for a fact that the majority of those people were theater veterans with more experience than me.
Basic theater etiquette. Does everyone ignore it?? First impressions are crucial, it boggles my mind that so many people chose to act like divas and flounce off the stage without thanking the accompanist or even speaking two the directors, and leaving the school without even offering to help with the piano.
I find this inexcusable. I hope none of you make those mistakes.

That is really annoying, but if the directors noticed, it's an advantage for you! lol.
I didn't really notice if other people said thank you at our auditions. I always make sure to because I HATE people thinking I am snobby or a diva.

Being as thoughtful and polite as you were will definitely work in your favor.
However, I am probably one of those rude idiots you're talking about because I am generally so nervous and flustered that I barely remember how to breathe and walk, much less remember my manners. I just become a complete nervous idiot at auditions. I couldn't tell you what 2+2 is.

I thank everyone at auditions because I don't know what else to say!
I lose a bit of my winning personality ( ) at auditions, and just become really nice. My personality really comes out in my audition performances, but when I come back to me, all I can really say is "Thank you". Mostly this is true for singing auditions, as I'm not the most confident singer, despite a good voice.

I'm always the only person to remember to thank the accompanist - I've been in their position, so I empathise with them and I also think they do a great job and don't get much recognition. Especially at auditions. Several audition panels have thanked me for thanking the accompanist.

This is literally why you practice HOW YOU ENTER/EXIT A ROOM! LOL!
Honestly, you should practice that as much as you practice your piece...
(I believe "Audition" expands upon this idea...I LOVE that book! LOL!)

I always thank the casting directors and accompanist at auditions out of habit. I've been taught to say thank you to my dance teachers at the end of my dance classes so it's just natural for me to say thank you before I leave the room. But yes, I agree that you really do need to practice you entrance, introduction, and exit. First impressions can last a loooong time, so take advantage of them!

Kind of have to second this mindset. Especially if you are new to a group you might not know what behavior is acceptable or expected, or just too darn nervous.
