audition- cindy and little red

So I'm a sophomore and we're doing this for our spring musical. I was one of the only freshmen last year who got a part, but this year...im not so sure that i will get a part. I've been told i would make a good little red and a good Cinderella. I would LOVE to be Little Red, but there are many other girls who are really good and also are little red-esque. acting-wise, i'm okay, not great, but just as good as the other sophomores. my range is kinda big, i can get to a D below middle C (lower occasionally) and up to the whistle tones (middle c, c above, c above, and to the eish above there, but im not too good much higher than a G one octave about middle G...if that makes sense). My belt is mainly untrained, so i try not to use it a lot, but i can belt a bit if i work on it. any thoughts as to who i should aim for (general audition, then callbacks) or what i would be good playing? im not too familiar with the show. thanks!!!

listen to the recording!!!!

with any sondheim show, you need fair acting skills and the ability to understand complex lyrics. if you're more of a singer, cindy or rapunzel are good options. if you're short, red is great! for red, you ned to be able to move well as well as sing and act.

i'm not suggesting the witch or baker's wife because (altho they're fab roles) i don't think your voice is ready - on the description you gave me.

go for cindy, rappy, and reddy.

i'll come back and give you more info if you want but i have to go.

pm me if you want!

The ORGINAL BROADWAY RECORDING! Don't make the mistake of listening to the revival, it's not worth it.

Other than that, I think Music is my Life has summed it up pretty well. Good Luck![/quote]

Thank you all so much!! i'm familiar (sort of) with the music, just not the storyline and the actual characters so much. do the most people generally fit under the "little red" category? because im most worried about the other, pretty good, short girls that could also fill this role.

ps
yes, i am short, but the other girls are exactly the same height and two inches shorter. and we're all really close. and all sophomores. and all pretty much the same vocally (i like to think that i'm half a hair better, but that's only because i'm louder. but really, the same) and all going out for the same role. how awkward is that?

For the Secret Garden, we had about 15 little girls going for Mary(including me) and we all had to sing The Girl I Mean to Be. I pity our directors for that show.

Regarding appearance - In high school shows, I really don't think that your appearance is crucial to the audition process. I mean, I suppose if you had two girls who were equally great, but one of them fit the part physically, then she would be more likely to be chosen (and even then, their year and grades probably would be accounted for first). But otherwise, I think you being a few inches taller than other girls won't be an issue. Go for the character that you think you will do awesome at and you know you will enjoy, regardless of your appearance or the appearance of others.

(I'm 4'11" and the shortest member of the cast, and yet play one of the older characters - Rapunzel - in our community production. XD Physically, I suit Little Red, but as you can see...it didn't matter much.)

You seem to want to be Little Red, so by all means go for her! Smile I wish you luck with your auditions. (Or break a leg; whichever you prefer.)

maybe it wouldn't be a big deal to you, but this is my school show. all my friends will be in it, and for many, it will be their last show. I love being in shows but im not allowed to do them outside of school. so actually, to me this is a big deal. a really big deal.

If you have this mentality, then you shouldn't be an actor. You are allowing yourself to give up before you even try. Saying this to yourself afterwards if you don't, yeah, other parts will come is true and is ok after you've tried, but you won't get any of them if you don't fight like hell for them.

Thank you, ConverseSneaker.
