Audition advice

Hello!

I know these posts get really annoying, and I apologize in advance...I just found out that I might be auditioning for a production of Cats here in a few months and I was wondering what parts I should look at. I am familiar with the show(I mean, really, who isn't?) But I don't really know who sings what songs and things like that. My last role was Hope in Urinetown and before that I was a Silly Girl in Beauty and the Beast. I usually get cast as very naive or very bombshell-y. I am most comfortable in mezzo range, but I have a strong soprano range as well. I am a strong dancer, although not a trained dancer. I pick up on things very easily and I don't look ackward doing it and I used to be a cheerleader so I'm pretty flexible. But singing is definately my strong suit, but I still love to dance. I also have good comedic timing(or so I've been told). Oh and I'm 22(if it really matters...but I'll be 23 when that rolls around).

Also, if you could give me songs that the characters you suggest sing, it would be so very helpful. It's hard to pick out individual characters in the recordings.

Thank you so much!

It sounds like you could go for Bombalurina or Demeter....possibly Jellylorum. Bombalurina and Demeter do a lot more dancing than Jellylorum does.
Bombalurina is the red queen. She is part of the duo that sings 'Macavity'. She is a part of the trio that sings 'Bustopher Jones'. She is a part of the trio that sings 'The Gumbie Cat'. She also does a short duet in the song 'Grizabella, The Glamour Cat'. Bombalurina is supposed to be a 'sexy' cat.
Demeter is the gold and black cat. She is a part of the duo that sings 'Macavity'. She is a part of the trio that sings 'The Gumbie Cat'. She does a short duet in the song 'Grizabella, The Glamour Cat'. She is supposed to be a very pretty cat, but also is very skittish.
Jellylorum is a light yellow and brown cat. She is usually a soprano. She is a part of the trio that sings 'The Gumbie Cat.' She is a part of the trio that sings 'Bustopher Jones'. She is the female soloist in 'Gus, The Theater Cat'. She sings the Aria Duet in 'Growltiger's Last Stand'. She is a 'motherly' or 'aunt' type cat who helps take care of the aging 'Gus'. In some productions (usually the UK) she is considered to be an older cat (like in her 40's). In other productions (US versions), she is younger and only a little older than Bombalurina.

Of course, body type also plays a part in the casting process. It depends on how tall you are. If you are short, then you would most likely be cast as a 'kitten'. Perhaps Sillabub/Jemima would be a good one in that case. The first three characters I suggested are usually a little taller....around 5'6" or taller. Although, Demeter may be a bit more flexible. Demeter's are usually shorter than Bombalurina's.

I completely agree with Ms J, sounds like you'd be a good Bombalurina but it depends on your height although I HAVE seen shorter Bomba's soooo......but sing something jazzy like "if i were a bell" from guys and dolls or another song that is up tempo. good luckon your audition lovey! Very Happy Very Happy

Good luck on your audition.

Yes especially if you get cast as bombshells, look at Bomb or Demeter. Sing something that shows your belt.

I was Little Sally ;P

Thanks guys! I have been looking at videos on YouTube (especially the Macavity video) and can definately see myself as Bombalurina or Demeter. I am good friends with the choreographer and has said himself that I am a bombshell, sooo I'm sure that doesn't hurt. Haha. I really hope that I get either of those parts. From what I have seen Demeter is a more singing intensive part. Or am I completely wrong? Or are Bomba and Demeter pretty even?

You guys are so very very helpful and so very VERY friendly!

Ms. Magistifo~ You were Little Sally? Isn't Urinetown a blast? I had so much fun in it!

It would help you a lot if you rented or bought the video. Smile

It's next up on my Netflix! Very Happy Is the video cast different from the script that is released to community theatres? Because I know that there is a difference from cast to cast. Or am I talking nonsense?

The video cast includes the same characters. There are a few who's names are changed in various productions, but they're still the same cat. There is however a scene called Growltiger's Last Stand, which is performed in every production but the video. If you were to get the part of Jellylorum, you would also play the part of Griddlebone in Growltiger's Last Stand. Very Happy

to answer your question, demeter and bombalurina are verrrrrrrry even in singing/dancing. they usually stick together.
