Audio Clips of Sweeney Todd Opening Night!

I just found on youtube some audio clips of the opening night of Sweeney Todd in 1979. They are quite bad quality but still worth listening to.

Thank you!

Dear actor,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Being able to hear audio footage from 1979 is special to me, because I was born during that same year, and I love "Sweeney Todd" so much!

I think that Len Cariou could have sounded much more British, but the audience seemed to really love some of those humorous lines, and they seemed to like the songs, too!

I think that it's interesting that nobody laughed when Lovett sang about her "rumpled bedding". LOL!
Cool

Explain please? I've never heard this story.

^I've heard several places that during the first performance, about half of the audience walked out in disgust during the intermission (possibly because of the judge's very realistic acting during mea culpa Wink )

I think that was previews. Mea Culpa was cut during previews.

I sometimes wonder if it was Hal Prince's decision to keep Todd's pronunciation limited to a standard North American sound; George Hearn clearly didn't try to change his, either. Perhaps they wanted it to be easier for the audience to (twistedly) identify with the title character.
