Audience impact...AIDS in performance...??Hey, just been thinking and would like some more views on this.
What impact do you think AIDS in Rent has on its audience? Do you think it inspires/offends/anything else audience members? Does the whole 'no day but today' idea inspire people who possibly have AIDS?? Interesting topic i feel...

yes it is an interesting topic..
well for me..
it taught me about aids really. being a teen in australia, you dont really hear about aids all that much.
before i thought it was just something that poor africans get but it really opened my eyes.
however, if i had aids i think that it would inspire me.. quite a lot.
cant really think what else to say.

Um, were you livving under a rock? Don't you remember all of the TV ads in the 90s with the bowling Grim Reaper? I'd say there was a fair bit of media attention.

i was a young kid for most of the 90s.. i didn't exactly watch much television.

Do you at least know what it stands for?
Auto
Immune
Deficiency
Syndrome
It comes from when the Human Immunodeficiency Virus attacks the T-Cells in the body (the immune cells) and hijacks them and mutates them to kill the body. And the weird thing is, the HIV isn't even a living organism. It can be transmitted through blood, sex, and other ways. It's not just poor little kids in Africa. It's anyone who has it and transmits it to someone else.
That's why you don't do drugs!!!!!
Or sex before the age of 22!!!

Actually, it's Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome...

Well I know, but it's very odd that such a thing takes over a T-cell and makes itself alive and deadly. I was in awe as we were discussing this in Bio.

Oop I wrote it in my notes wrong.
And my biology teacher said something about there being less of a chance of "acquiring" this after the age of 21. The majority of the cases of AIDS have been between the ages of 14 to 21 or something like that.

I don't know. She's pretty knowledgeable. And her husband is a Bio professor at the university.

The main reason the majority of AIDS cases happen between 14 and 21 is because too many people in that age range don't use condoms. Your teacher honestly seems like she's distorting statistics to encourage you kids not to have sex.
You can't contract HIVfrom having sex if your partner doesn't have HIV/AIDS. So all you have to do is make sure that your partner doesn't have HIV/AIDS and you can have all the sex you want.

I believe you. But no my teacher is definitely not just trying to get us to not have sex. Haha. She couldn't care less. She's not one of those people who are like "You're kids! Don't have sex!"

At uni it's a different story. It's basically "Keep it down so you disturb anyone else who's trying to sleep/study"

I've never heard the 14-21 age thing. I don't think age matters at all. You probably misinterpreted what she said.

ooh this is so interesting.
with the age thing, i think its probably because those younger than 22 don't use condoms. much.
and, even if your partner tells you they don't have hiv, they still might because a) they could be lying or b)they just don't know yet because its early stages.
no sex or drugs? i think that might be the best way to avoid aids.

In the UK, they hand out free condoms everywhere.
School, hospital, sex clinics, even on the streets during campaigns.
There is no excuse not to wear one. CONDOMS CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE.
Plus, in the UK, if you've had sex and tell a nurse about it, they are bound by a contract not to tell your parents or anyone, even if you're under the age limit. However, your teacher's have to tell your parents if they find out.

What terrifies me is the number of young gay men these days who think that AIDS is something that happened in the 80s, that has since been cured.
