Assassins

Okay, auditions for Assassins are coming up in a couple weeks - I'm currently doing A Chorus Line, but the schedule isn't so tight that I can't fit in another show. However, I'm only doing Assassins if I get the part of Hinckley - one, because I love his duet, and two - because it's far enough that I wouldn't want anything ensemble-y and it's still a small enough role that it won't take up too much time rehearsal-wise. Here's my problem: I'm 16. Smile I know Hinckley's supposed to be a college student, but I've never really seen him played by anyone who looks younger than 30 - I could pass as 18 or college-aged easily, but I'm just curious if he's really normally cast to an older guy? Also, I'm considering a bunch of different songs for auditioning with.. I'm thinking Take Me As I Am or Someone Like You from Jekyll and Hyde, since they're both ballads in basically the same range as Unworthy of Your Love - I know "Someone" is sung by a female character, but there really aren't any gender references in it at all, so I figure it would be fine. My range is A - F#... any other suggestions?

Well, I just did some research... Hinckley was born in 1955. He attempted to assassinate Reagan in 1981, making him 26 at the time... so it's no surprize that he is generally cast in his 30's. I think the best role for someone your age would be the balladeer because he should be younger than the others (who are in their late 20's to early 40's).

The Balladeer is a tenor, I'm a baritone and can't quite hit all his notes comfortably enough. Although Hinckley was 26 at the time of the attempted assassination, his character is 21 in Assassins. It takes place before the actual assassinations occur.

Nevertheless, I think 16 might look a bit young. But since Assassins is rarely done, I would audition. You might be in the ensemble.
