As predicted......the movie upstaged the musical- costume-wise, anyway. I haven't seen a regional production of it copy Burton's designs yet, but I haven't seen any since the movie premiered.
BUT...
I went to this forensics tournument on Saturday, and the host school dressed in costumes. (A tradition that has long died out.) Their theme was Broadway, and few of the costumes were recognisable. Except... Sweeny & Mrs. Lovett. Dressed to the nines as Johnny & HBC's characters. Skunked hair, dark vest, boobs falling out and the dis-sheveld bun hair. What creativity.

Yeah, the movie costumes are going to be more iconic.. people are going to associate them with Sweeney, especially the white stripe in the hair thing.
I went to school dressed as the revival Toby... blue striped PJ's and a violin. 2 people got it-- my best friend and my drama teacher. Then again, we're like the only three people that knew Sweeney in the school at the time....

It's impossible to compare costuming for the theatre (playing to the back row) vs. costuming for the cinema (playing for the close-up shot). They're two completely different animals and oranges.
But yes, JDepp does always get his hair right for the part.

2 things I didn't like about the movie wardrobe:
Pirelli's spandex attrocity
and that stupid white stripe in Depp's hair.

i thought the only reason why hbc's boobs were all over the place was
she was pregnant during the making of it. That's why they're huge.
If girls think thats what Lovett is supposed to look like than I have to laugh in their faces!

How is people using the new movie costumes any less original than people using the typical Broadway costumes?
Either way you're copying something else.

For me, it's not exactly the originality that is bothersome. It's the fact that it's the movie. I mean... it seems like no one appreciated or even recognised the existense of Sweeney until the movie came out. It's like saying "I love musicals." but in truth... you mostly love movie-musicals.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a movie version more than a theater version, or enjoying one's costumes to the other. I know that makes me a blasphemer, but honestly, I loved Johnny Depp's costume.

I like aspects from all of the versions costume-wise. I like that Sweeney now has an "iconic" look to counter the devil buns Mrs. Lovett has been known for from the start. If I were to design for a production of Sweeney, I'd do a hybrid of the various versions...
(I do mean all versions too, Toby's straight jacket is the only part of the revival I actually like.)

I agree...although I do think it's wrong when people assume that Johnny Depp's Sweeney is just the "OMGZBESTEVERRR4LYFE" (or what have you...) I do think that there is nothing wrong with enjoying the film enough that you would wear the costume...
I don't see anything wrong with it anyway...I probably woulda been like "Heeyy cool costumes!"
I don't think that enjoying the costumes of the film is a problem...I think the costum design was really awesome actually (granted the white stripe in Depp's hair was a little o_O but it was still cool anyway...) and I am an ardent lover of Sweeney on stage!

Not any more. She just had the baby a few weeks ago.
And, to get back to the topic at hand, I quite enjoy the film costuming. Even though the cast wasn't as good as the ones on Broadway have been, the costuming was wonderful. The only part of the Broadway costuming I really missed much was the Lansbury-Lovett horns.

While the traditional Lovett costume was of course iconic and everyone loves it...In my opinion it went along with that style of Lovett...hyper and comedic. With HBC's softer Lovett I don't think the traditional hair would have come across quite as well.

The reason why it was bothering me was b/c they kept pushing the fact that they're costumes were "broadway-themed," but those costumes have never graced a broadway stage. Sure, they've been seen in the film adaptation, but that's not broadway. I actually did like their costumes; they were fairl ytrue to the movie. I didn't love the movie's cotumes, but I wasn't disappointed. It's just not... Broadway.

just to throw in my 2 cents:
i didnt really care for pierrelli's movie costume.
mrs lovett didnt have the right hair for me, i like it much better on stage - even tho it's not ALWAYS like angela lansbury's.
sweeney's gloves and "skunk" stripe were nothing i cared for.
