Re: Are You A Reader? BBC List

Is their estimate really only six for the average person? I despise reading and am filled with contempt for it, but even I have read twenty-one of these. I'm only counting books I have actually read, not the countless ones I was clever enough to never touch, but still dupe college professors into totally buying that I read. Reading is for dorks.

.... hmm... 23

I'm surprised that "Frankenstein" is not on the list, since "Dracula" is.
A lot of these I'd really like to read, but it's not the first thing I think of when I go to the bookstore. Thank goodness for Jane Austen or my list would be even more pitiful. Wink

Re: Are You A Reader? BBC List

I have an awful habit of not finishing books, so I'm putting an 'x' by the ones I've finished and a '-' by the ones I've only read part of.

34 finished, 8 unfinished.

What is this supposed to be a list of, anyway? Books that make up the English-speaking collective unconscious? That's the only justification I can think of for putting dreck like the Da Vinci Code on the same list as the Brontë sisters. A lot of these seem to be books that are important not for what they are but because a lot of people have read them and they form a sort of cultural reference point.

69...not too bad, really! Curious that the Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is listed seperately from The Chronicles of Narnia though.

Reading is not for dorks. And while some people may think that fooling college professors into thinking that they have read books prescribed for a course is really clever, it's just cheating really and mostly the kind in which those people cheat themselves of a better education and a richer mind.

That, and if you've read one of hers, you've read them all. Same story, different character names.

If you're going to read just one thing on this list, make it this one. I do highly reccommend it.

Ummm... NO.

It's how I found it to be. Sense and Sensibility vs. Pride and Prejudice is like red-orange vs. orange-red.

I was apparently very tired the last time I did my list, because there were quite a few that were wrongly marked, and a few that were missed! (Hello Lord of the Rings!)
Beagle On Stage

Gwen, I know you would appreciate The Handmaid's Tale. Pick it up the next chance you get. A reccommendation from me on this subject means a lot.

(The arguing, not the book lists)
Seriously, it's very simple. Either you like doing it or you don't. No sense judging a person whether or not they like to do something like this. Some people like to read, some people don't. End.

Re: Are You A Reader? BBC List

The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books here.... I have no idea why the BBC lists Hamlet separately from The Complete Works, but I chose not to edit their list!

Quite simply, it's because this list wasn't put out by the BBC. The actual list of 100 books, which was compiled after a search to find the most popular books in the UK is here and consists of the following titles:

What has been posted here, along with the statistical "6 books" idea, is a corrupted version of this list that has appeared in email forwards and on blogs since this list appeared in 2003. You'll notice, for instance, that there are no plays in the list and separate books in series (like the four Harry Potters or The Magic Faraway Tree) are listed separately. The Bible doesn't appear on the list either.

I've read more on the "real" list, too.

David, thanks for doing the research! Where ever the list originated, and however it was corrupted, I am delighted to see so many people not only looking to see which they have read, but also considering reading others. While I have read most of these, they are not a list of my favorites, though some are included. I am thinking about doing a "List your 25 favorite books" thread... with no requirement that they be classics, considered literature, or even acceptable by anyone's standards. I'd really like to know what you all are reading, whether it's chapbooks or graphic novels! (But you can't include your newspapers, What You Own...they are a separate guilty pleasure you have already shared!)
Mademoiselle Lanoire

I have read:

x] Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
[x] The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien
[x] Harry Potter series - JK Rowling (up to book 5)
[x] To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee

[x] Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
[x] Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell
[x]Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
[x] Little Women - Louisa M Alcott
[x ] Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier
[x] The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien
[x ] Bleak House - Charles Dickens
[x] The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
[x] Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll
[x ] Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis
[x ] The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - CS Lewis (why the repetitition? shouldn't they list something else?)
[x] Animal Farm - George Orwell
[x] The Handmaid’s Tale - Margaret Atwood
[x] Dune - Frank Herbert
[x] A Tale Of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
[x ] Brave New World - Aldous Huxley

Antiquated? What definition of "antiquated" are you using? Well over half that list is 20th and 21st century.

Reading is not for dorks. And while some people may think that fooling college professors into thinking that they have read books prescribed for a course is really clever, it's just cheating really and mostly the kind in which those people cheat themselves of a better education and a richer mind.

In what possible way can reading the finest and most stimulating works of imagination and expression of the ages be considered an activity for 'dorks'? What a very sad attitude.

The books are supposed to be read by everyone on a course, so that their contents may form a body of common matter to discuss, consider, and use as debating material. Without knowing the body of common matter, how could you ever form an educated opinion in discussion, or for that matter even know what the heck someone else (who HAD read the books) was talking about?

All cheats end up with is a facile, superficial awareness of the outline of a book. They deny themselves the opportunity to enrich their minds and truly learn from it.

Yeah, this. There are few greater pleasures than opening a book and being taken away to somewhere completely different for an hour or two; somewhere you can never go to meet people you never will, and to "learn about ways of life different to yours". The most beautiful of human thought and feeling can be found in our books, and it is worth every moment going out and finding them.

It can't be that you are averse to story itself, so I can only guess it must be the physical act of reading, in which case I would suggest audiobooks. Or it may be that you don't like to use your imagination and prefer to have the thing physically shown in front of you. Either way, you are missing out on something incredibly important.

Looking back, it's quite remarkable the range and scope of things I read thanks to my school. Off the top of my head, I have a fairly in-depth analytical knowledge of: Shakespeare, Williams, Shelley, Yeats, Salinger, Steinbeck, Camus, Mauriac, Frost, Wordsworth, Dickinson, Rosetti, Sophocles, Miller, Chaucer and Bierce. And I know I'm so much the richer as a person for reading them.

Anyway, the ones I want to move onto next are The Shadow of the Wind and Persuasion.

Felix, when you finish Shadow of the Wind, let me know. I'd love to hear what you think... I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
Felix Felicis

I'm very much looking forward to it. I've had it for years and never got round to it, but one day my French teacher just out of the blue asked me if I'd read it and I thought I'd like to be able to say yes.
SianZena

I'm quite impressed that I've read thirteen because, even though I love to read, most of these books are classics, and my prefered style is Modern Romantic novels.

56. Not bad. I adopted the habit quite early in childhood of determinedly reading even the most unprepossessing books, partly out of profound boredom during long summer holidays and partly because I knew there was a strong likelihood that even something like 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' would have some merit or interest, since it had attained 'classic' status.

I feel that reading voraciously and widely has enriched my outlook on life, deepened my appreciation of my own culture and state, and given me more understanding of other cultures and peoples.

43 - Which is somewhat surprising considering that I don't usually read fiction unless the cover has the words "Star" and "Wars" on the cover.

For me it does...three different versions.

For me it does...three different versions.

That's as it should be.

You can't really appreciate the majority of the English literature canon without having read the Bible. Goodness, every other metaphor you read is a Biblical reference.

And one (KJV) was quite enough for me, thank you very much.

You're either going to see it as the book which inspires you and which you should live by and learn from, or as the world's most influential work of fiction. Whichever, it's a must read.

What I mean is, everyone is checking off the Bible as one they have read. But for some reason I'm doubting that everyone has read every book of the Bible. I think it's more likely that most have read Genesis, Exodus, about half of the gospels, and know several of the stories in between.

Nah, wars, incest, plagues, miracles, crucifixion and people getting eaten by whales, it's a total page turner. Although Paul's letters to the Corinthians are pretty hard going.

Exactly.

"Exactly," like it goes without saying? You aren't naive, Felix - don't start now.

Excuse me? Naive? I was echoing the sentiments that I put it on my list because I have read the entire book - and I explained why it was useful to me above.

Same here...granted, I didn't wake up one day and say "I'm going to read the Bible today" but I did read the entire thing, cover to cover, for class.

I spent about a year reading/studying the New Testament plus Psalms and Proverbs, and a bit longer than a year going through the rest of the Old. I took my time, just reading a bit every night, but I would say it was a good experiance, reading the bible itself and then commentary on that section and then meditating on it for a while.

Same here. I read every word of the King James Version when I was 16.
kozafluitmusique

That's why I said only read some of it. I still need to go through it more. However, this reminds me of a survey that someone I know did that he wanted to compare someone reading the entirety of the Bible with a Lord of the Rings series. Personally, I think that's an unfair comparison.

Mistress

I know it's a bit late, but then I've just found this thread (haven't been able togon on here too much lately) and I feel like smacking Beagle for "detesting" reading. I'm a total book-a-holic when I have the time (I can go through several books in week sometimes) and can think of nothing better than losing yourself in a good novel (except maybe losing yourself in a godo movie). Books basically got me through my elementary years where I was almost a total loner for one reason or another. I spent a lot of time at recess reading Nancy Drew or Agatha Christies and wrote something like 3 or 4 pages for a reading journal or Rats of NIMH when it was only supposed to be half that length. Now, most of the books on the list I read in School. I have fond emories of being one of the only students who remotely enjoyed Jane Eyre XD. Anyway, I mean no disrespect to Beagle, but it does anger and sadden me that someone could hate reading so much (except, apparantly, A Handmaid's Tale)...
Catherine

Similar to Orestes, I'm putting the plus sign for the books I haven't finished yet.

Mine does.

This is the perfect final post... God, what an amazing person we've lost.

I read dozens of books a year, and I'm not ashamed to say that I haven't read a lot of these books. Most of them are boring as hell. Yeah, I know most of them are "classics." Call me an iconoclast but after attempting to slog my way through many of them, I've found that they are less awesome in this day and age, and more yawnsome. (No Mark Twain? Bah!)
Today, authors have to grab the reader within a chapter, if not the first page to keep a person's attention.

List is redundant anyway. You have the Chronicles of Narnia, but list the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, as a separate entry? And do the Chronicles count as 7 books? The Lord of the Rings are 3 books...Harry Potter series is another 7..um..Hey, there's 17 books right there.
