Appropriate for a mature 12 year old?

I heard that this was a really funny musical and was wondering if it would be appropriate for my 12 year old sister.

I was originally debating between this or Wicked, but Wicked is sold out and I just saw some discounted tickets for this. Of course, I could always go with another musical, but I have no idea what. I'm not too keen on seeing a Disney musical.

Thanks in advance!

umm...

ive never actually seen it...but my friend did. she said it has a good amount of profane language and innuendo. idk...look up summaries and plot overviews online??

sorry i couldnt be more of help.

I don't see a problem with the show. If she's seen a Monty Python movie, than she's ready for Spamalot. Wink

(My 12-year-old brother has seen/heard it, and it didn't screw him up).
Defying_gravity_4life

MOST DEFINITELY NOT!!!!! The rviews say it's fine but there's a HUGE giant Gay scene towards the end of the show and itb has woman giveing bread hand jobs...its a very sexual show in act II....I would'nt take a 12 year old to go see it!
<3Wilson<3

I don't see anything wrong with a "gay scene" unless they are having sex on stage, which I doubt. Hand jobs, huh? Can you actually see them doing that or is it implied? If it's implied, I'm sure the 12 year old wouldn't understand have the sexual implications.
Defying_gravity_4life

well no, its random and the "chorus" people r doing it while the leads are singing/talking/wtvr and I know there IS NOTHING wrong w/ a gay scene me and my mom went to go see Rent in theatres.....she made me walk out of it half way thru cuz it deled w/ gays and she was all mad it kinda makes me mad that she is like thbat, thats why she wouldntlet me go see the tour...but anyways, theyre not really "doing it" but the like roleplaying??? all the guys pull their pants off and u can see their Underwear and they start pretending they r humping each other, well i wouldnt let my child see taht until he/she was at lleast 14 or 13
<3Wilson<3

I'n sure that the 12 year old has seen/heard/or done worst than that. You can only keep a kid sheltered for so long and nowadays thats age of "innocence" is becoming younger and younger.
BwayJuvinile

Should be fine for a 12 year old. It is pretty much just like the original movie minus the spanking girls.
allygator

Definitely a mature twelve-year-old should be fine. My ten-year-old cousin (also mature) went to see it and loved it.

How sad.

ALoneWanderer

I'd say for a mature 12 year old the show wouldn't a be a problem at all.
what_the_heck013

My 12 year old sister saw it, and she had no problems. Of course, she has seen the film and has grown up in a Monty Python family.

The statement or my views on it?
Salome

I grew up watching Monty Python as did alot of people of my generation. the repeats were constantly on PBS. this show is fine for a 12 year old.

Can I say both?

At 12, I was forbidden to watch anything higher than PG. Film or theatre.

Monty Python is not for children under the age of 16.

How old are you now? Not all parents care. That's just the way it is. I'm not saying that all kids are corrupt, but when was the last time you where in a middle school or high school actually talking to kids? Anyways back on subject, it's fine for a 12 year old.
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Well...fine for a 12 yr old if you for get the rampent sex scene, the graphic murder AND the pot smoking....

OH! Someone could have told me this was the SPAMALOT forum...i thought this was HAIR! Though quite where the murder is in that...although Vietnam could be considered as murder...but thats opening a whole new can of worms!

Back to the point! It's fine for a 12yr old.
Monsieur D'Arque

I don't know how much they'll appreciate it, though. It's Monty Python. Most of the verbal humour will miss them. The physical stuff though, and the coconuts, they'll enjoy.
RyanJ

I saw it on broadway about 2 months ago, it was marvelous. It's typical Monty Python humor, there were several families around me and noone seemed to have any problems. Don't worry about it Smile

Oh, please! I'm under 16 and I've been watching the film, for a while now, and I've just found out about Spamalot, so I've been listening to that a lot. If the 12-year old is mature enough to handle the film, then I'm sure she can see the show, I'd say go for it!

I think this depends on the maturity of the child. I'm thirteen. I've seen RENT, The Producers, Avenue Q and my mom wants to take me to Spamalot (but I want to see Les Mis instead.) Has it messed me up more than any of my friends? No. However, I've seen all of those mature musicals within the last year.

It depends on the actual 12-year old. I wouldn't take some 18-year olds I know to see Spamalot because they don't act mature enough. I know adults that shouldn't see Spamalot. It's not the age, it's the maturity.

Besides, chances are she's already seen everything in Spamalot and then some more.

Yep, I agree. It all about how mature the person is. I'm just one-year older the Eponine93, and I've seen RENT and the Producers (the films) as well.

"Maturity" is just a state of mind. Nothing more, nothing less.

this is coming to Utah in August I think, I am so excited, but I am going to ask my mom if I can buy tickets for it and she will want to get tickets with me... Then it will get awkward, when the Lancelot parts come on, there is going to be awkward tension between the two of us...

I have only listened to the CD and you can tell it can't be to good for a youngin to go see. But some people will beg to differ.

Edit: I just had to add this, so I was looking on Broadway Across America and it said age Appropriateness for Adia was 13+ and for Spam a lot it was 8+ and Hairspary 13+. something just a little messed up here.

Agreed. I'm fifteen, but wouldn't put it past my twenty-five year old brother to be too immature for it.

I think a lot of it will go over your brother's head, but most of it will have him cracking up. Most of the dirtier stuff is quick and painless and shouldn't be much of a problem.

Perhaps let him see Monty Python and the Holy Grail first, and see what his reaction is.
SuperKabob

Whe we saw it, I was still 12 and my brother was 9.
Audrey II

Coincidentally, I am a mature 12 year old, and it didn't screw me up.
Patrick

12? should be fine, and whomever said the age of innocence is going should be reminded of something from a lil while ago:

younger than she are happy mothers made

Quick notes:

The original post was written in June of 2006.
The author of the original post only made that one post in this whole website.
The author never returned to read the posts, according to her profile.
Even if she had returned, I'm sure she would have seen the show by now.

Good day.

I don't think a twelve-year-old would have any problem with the content of the show, and it's such a brilliant musical.
sopranodespair

My 11-year-old sister went and seen it with us and she was Ok. She's mature about those kind of things even though she's immature about everything else. And there is some stuff in it she probably didnt understand anyway
theg8whiteway

Lots of stuff would probably blow right over their heads.
