Appropriate for a high school?

yes? no?
because I've heard of schools doing it, but has it turned out well or alright?

thanks Smile

I don't think it's too innapropriate.
I mean there are a few gun shots but thats it.
I don't think hteres any horrible words in there either.

i would kill to do this show....hahah no pun intended.
nabla

it depends how your school feels about sexual innuendo, because there's a lot of that
aworthyboyishe

Wow..
I wish our school would do this..

I would kill to be Billy Flynn. Smile

But most high schools would have a big issue.. particularly with all-that-jazz... and all the smoking and drinking. I mean.. we did Grease... but we cut out all the smoking and drinking.. chances are you'd have to go to a private school to do this show.

I don't think any high school should do, and not due to the fact of the inappropriateness of the show.

on the whole, chicago is so much technique-based on the fact that the fosse-style choreography (although less physically demanding then other shows) is sooo hard to get down RIGHT. i do fosse-style choreography as a dancer and know how one move is hard to perfect. and getting it down IN the style of fosse isnt as hard as straight-out fosse, its hard for high school students to get down and the choreography is a story in itself in the show.

i've seen performances of chicago done by high schools via youtube and ive only seen one which was somewhat ok in terms of body language and the vocals were satisfactory. i know my high school would never approve of it anyway.
but all around, i think this show should stick on the professional level.

No.
Smoking, drinking, murder, sex, bad guys.
Plus, I don't think most high schools could handle it visually, vocally, overall. Everything.
And they hardly license it to amateur groups, let alone high schools.

Your school would have to be pretty liberal to do that.
But I'd loove to do the show someday.

Private school, tick!

And the dancing styles.. Although we have some pretty damn talented choreographers and dancers at our school, of course they wouldn't be absolutely exceptional..

Sexual innuendo? ehh that's sort of so-so. We did anything goes this year and theres a fair bit of sexual hints in there. Obviously, its nothing compared to Chicago, but, like, it wouldn't be a first..

Our school was supposidly trying to do it this year, but they couldn't get the rights because someone bought them out or something? I'm not too sure.

well, lets just wait and see. only time will tell Smile

I'm so excited, we're doing it at my school this year (we had some trouble with the rights too, but we eventually got them). And at first everyone was afraid our director would lose his job, with some of the content in the show, and because last year we did Godspell. My school district is very strict about almost everything, so Chicago and Godspell are kind of pushing it on the 'no religion' and 'no sex' rules.

But we have alot of pretty good singers, though almost all of our girls are sopranos (including me), and alot of us can dance, but some of us dance like robots. It gets really boring. The biggest problem I can think of is the content, the orchestra (i dont know, theres alot of brass instruments in the score, and alot of people were hire as our orchestra blow at brass-insrument playing. no pun intended), and the choreography. It's insanely painful to watch bad choreography in a huge dance show. And it's FOSSE. d'oh! I'm praying.

But I would agree that Chicago is not a good idea for high schools, but it really depends on the school it's being performed at and how good the directors are. Or how well the directors can convince the school principal to do the show. Laughing
IndigoMedusa

Does the show have to be done with the Fosse choreography?

My old school did Cabaret, and they pulled it off successfully...

If they can do Cabaret they could probably do Chicago...

3/5 a common place in high schools, and the other 2 everyone would have been exposed to through television/movies.

I don't see how it's inappropriate. Unless people won't take it seriously/school is protective.
