Appealing For Females?

I'm gearing up to propose a show to do with our youth theatre next summer, and after talking with some of the potential cast members, there seems to be a real interest in Guys and Dolls. Now, I absolutely love this show, and would love to direct it. With that being said, I did this show in high school (I played Nicely-Nicely), and I am well aware of the fact that the roles for women are, well, almost non-existant. Aside from the three main female speaking roles, the rest of the females are really only in the group scenes, the two Hot Box numbers, and the Havana scene. So, my question is, how do females feel about the limited stage time for the ensemble members? Would you get bored with the production? Would you want to seek out another production? I want to have as many people involved as possible, and I also want all the cast members to have fun and enjoy themselves. Any thoughts?

My high school did Guys and Dolls this year, and a lot of the females were really excited at first, but then after the cast list came out, were really bummed. Everyone had hopes of being Sarah or Adelaide, and many girls quit when they were put in the chorus.

I was initially very dissapointed because I knew that because I wasn't a senior I was going to be put in the chorus. However, the directors casted girls and guys, and I became a gender bender and played Benny Southstreet. It was a lot of fun, but it was different. We also made Arvide into Arvidia, and double casted Sarah, Adelaide, Arvidia, and the general.

I had a great time in G&D's, but if I was directing a youth theatre I would definetely try to pick a show that had more girl roles, because, in reality, most of the kids that do youth theatre are girls. If your kids don't mind being in the chorus, I would go for it.
