Anyone Going to See This?

It's on my list of things to get enthused about, because my man TIM JEROME is in it. DOes anyone have more info on it than what is on IBDb?

Des.
Desperado

I know a few people that are going for previews. I'm not one of them.
B3TA07

I'm wondering how this will work, since the movie if I recall only had two songs that were sung by the characters. I'm interested to hear what Phil Collins wrote to make the entire score.
Descartes

I hope Tim Jerome will get to sing something. He's so cool. If I do go, I'll be the one wearing the shirt that says "Tim Jerome and I are lovers!"

I think I will pass. I'm not a Tarzan fan to begin with, but I would like to see at least the sets.
what_the_heck013

I hated the movie. I think I'll hate the musical.
FunnyLittleMunqi

Seeing a preview of it.
cabaretfreak

Tell us what you think. Also could you try to describe the set and costumes?
B3TA07

Boot it.
wicked_diva

I have a pretty good feeling this will be one of the shows we see on our Drama Club trip. I'm looking foward to it. It'll be neat to see a new show on Broadway for my first or second Broadway show, and I liked the movie as well.

Tell us what you really think! Very Happy
MzGalinda

Absolutely not. It's this kind of cheap advertising that's bringing down the sophistication, if you will, of musical theatre. Tarzan? Phff. Not my cup o' tea.

I hated the movie. I think I'll hate the musical.
Baker

I'm seeing it in June.
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

Well, the movie has a soundtrack full of songs, just they're not all character-sung. Probably slightly re-written and included as the rest of the score.
LumBabsFan

Funny, people said a lot of the same things about B&B and the Lion King. This was one of the last great Disney films of the the new generation so it should make a cool show. I'm giving it a chance, definitely.
bloodmoney

I'm seeing it on April 1st. I think it deserves a chance.

After all, this is Disney that we're talking about.
And at least if the show sucks, I'm sure they won't skimp on special effects.

dramaluvergurl92

disney has been good in the past so i'm sure this will be good

See, I think B&B is so-so, and I'm really not big on the Lion King at all. (I'm talking about the stage versions, of course. The Disney movies r0x0rz.)
LumBabsFan

Well then again you're talking to someone who's seen B&B 48 times and 49 on Sunday (birthday tradition). Call me crazy, I don't care; some people spend as much money as me at clubs and bars. I go to see B&B. If Tarzan lives up to this, I'm going to love it.
Nicely-Nicely

I do hope Tarzan is great! I love B&B (not the current cast though) and I'm going to see Lion King soon... I haven't seen it yet but I bet it's great. I love Tarzan the movie though and I hope they have a lot of new and great songs.
Brock019

Just saw it on Friday...

I say the preview of it on friday (won the $20 tickets) and was blown away. Tim Jerome was awesome in this but even better was Josh Strickland. Wow, his vocal performance was on the whole night and he really got into the role of a man playing a gorilla. (Didn't look half bad either Very Happy.) I talked to the conductor during intermission (he turned around and asked what we thought) and he was telling us of all of the cuts they have made and are still making to make the show even better. I really would go see this if you can, the set is different, but in a good way and the opening underwater scene can only be experienced! The only thing I didn't like was that you could see all of the latches and hooks for when people flew around, and over half the cast was in the air for half the show! Phil Collins did use the two title songs from the movie version, and the rest of the songs were great. The soundtrack is set to be released sometime in June...you can pre-order it there or on the website.
MsDivaKate

Beauty and the Beast and Lion King are one thing. These were shows that actually had a lot of music in them as movies.

However, I don't recall Tarzan being that great as a movie musically...as I didn't really think the characters sang. I may be wrong though. Or biased as I never liked it as a movie to begin with.
renthead6147

oh pa-lease

Just because you didnt like the MOVIE, doesn't mean you wont like the MUSICAL. I personally HATE the B&TB movie, but when i see the show, I get a totally different impression. Its great in person. And Phil Collins is amazing.

so for the people who HAVE seen it... HOW WAS IT?!!!

I gave it a chance and I hated the show. I like the movie, but I think they slaughtered the musical. The set showed, IMO, a lack of creativity and was quite ugly. The acting was quite dry and uninvolved.

Vocally the show was great, not a huge fan of some of the songs, but at least the actors could sing. And all the aerial work was done well also.

I think Disney needs to select which movie to bring to Broadway a little more carefully. Toy Story would've turned out better than this. I saw Lion King during it's very first Pre-Broadway run in Minneapolis and was amazed. Saw it later on Broadway and was even more amazed. I know Disney can do great things on stage, but this is NOT one of them.
The Drama Queen

The show was enjoyable, just not utterly amazing. All the vocals were outstanding, as were the special effects, and costumes, but the acting sucked. Jane, she was very weak, although she could definitely sing, she just seemed kind of....plain. Kerchak was a different story- although I loved his voice, and his acting was acceptable, the songs he was given just stunk. The one he sang with Kala was kind of blah... didn't fit the style of the show, and there was hardly any chemistry between him and Dandridge at all.

Merle Dandrige however, rocked hands down. She actually got one of the decent songs in the show to sing (You'll be in My Heart) and as an audience member, you can really feel for her loss of a child and desperate need for Tarzan. Josh Strickland also rocked, although I had doubts as he is coming from American Idol, his acting was superb and singing fantastic.

Overall I would give it about a 6/10.
Baker

I agree with TDQ, except I didn't really like Kerchak... and I'd like to add that Terk was incredible!
The Drama Queen

oh yeah, one thing I forgot..

They cut the Elephant!!!!! The Elephant was like, the funniest part in the movie!! That part made me very sad... Sad

I saw it back in April. I thought it was okay. I think Disney could have done much better, though.

The talent was good. Shuler Hensley, Josh Strickland, and Chester Gregory II rocked. But I wasn't crazy about Jane (Jenn Gambatese).

I LOVED Alex Rutherford (Young Tarzan), and Merle Dandridge (Kala)

I hated the way Mr. Clayton was portrayed. I thought the guy's southern accent was horrible (trust me it's where I am from).

The problem was with the part you'd think Disney would be best at Spectacle. The first ten minutes was amazing (They made it look like the actors were actually swimming in water), but after that I could tell how everything was done. I sat in the Mezz, and you could see the backstage hands as they did everything.

But the cool part was Tarzan and the butterfly came out right over our heads. That was cool.

Basically I went in expecting the quality of Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, and came out very dissapointed.

It was an okay show. Talent: amazing. Spectacle: weak.

But I will add that they were in previews. So, things could have majorly improved. I think it's worth seeing just for the actors.

angellwings

P.S. I missed the elephant, too! It was sad, I loved him in the movie.
ICEcreamAssassin78

well i was excited to see this show when i was in NYC in May.. but the reviews were horrible and to be honest I like the movie. Its cute, touching, funny but not very musical. So I decided against it. Saw the color purple instead WOW!!!!!! what a show! amazing.. in any case. I believe Lion king to be number 1 in disney musicals and Beauty and the Beast a close 2nd. I can't wait to see Mary Poppins.. i hear its a gorgeous show with great classic songs. But coming in 2007-08..The Little Mermaid on Broadway...thats going to be great!!!!!! Smile

What Is This Feeling?

I don't know, maybe. We'll see...
Mysterious Poet

I have the CD and I think it is awesome. I really want to see this show. maybe the next time I head up to NYC it will be tops on my list.
piratee7

I pretty much agree with everything all the other people have said on the board about the show: the music's great, Kala's amazing, Terk is great too; Our Tarzan was the understudy Joshua Kobak: he sounded just like Josh Strickland on the CD so I thought the understudy wasn't even singing (though he probably was) I loved the new song "Everything That I Am"; the swinging vine scenes were pretty cool, despite the fact that you could see the wires from the back row, but the opening water/beach climbing scene was amazing. The acting was pretty good. I'd see it, but don't expect a Beauty and the Beast or Lion King.
Lady Jemima

Someone mentioned they cut out the spider scene because it felt fake. What does Tazan rescue Jane from now?

Comedy / "Sure as Sun Turns to Moon"

The Drama Queen wrote:

The Elephant was cute but, like Rosie as Terk, it was one of the things that didn't really work in the film because the style of the comedy worked against the film's general mood and atmosphere and, undermining the narrative to a certain extent. I found both characters in the film somewhat jarring and I thought Terk could have been fleshed out a little more. This seems to have been done in the stage adaptation, which I would be interested in seeing - even if it isn't on my list of "must-sees".

I'm not sure I agree - but then I am not sure which song you mean. But as "No Other Way" is more of a solo piece, I guess you must be referring to "Sure as Sun Turns to Moon".

Now I think that there is an authenticity and charm about "Sure as Sun Turns to Moon" that is lacking in other sections of the score. Yes, the song is deceptively simple. But I think it is a pretty keen observation of the relationship between Kala and Kerchak and the arrangement really reflects the way they tiptoe around each other and the African flavour doesn't feel as forced as it does in some of the other sections of the score. It also rhythmically foreshadows the way that the Tarzan-Jane relationship starts to develop in "Different".

I think the style of the song fits the show better than, say, "I Need to Know" which is more a traditionally arranged song that feels like it could fit into a dozen other scores without changing a note. I don't mean that it's a horrible number - I think it's a disarming little song. It just isn't as stylistically cohesive as it could/should be.

I wish I could see this show, but it doesn't look like I'm going to have the chance to... Confused Which is sad. Cause I'm one of those few rare people who thinks it looks and sounds AMAZING. But I NEVER get down to NYC. Never been there, and the way I'm going maybe I never will. Laughing I really want to see the cast though...Josh and Chester and Merle are AMAZING.
