Anyone else sing at church?

I do occasionally, and I'm looking for new material. I have sung some hymns, and Christmas songs, and some contemporary christian music.... but I was kind of looking for something a little bit more... classical? I dunno. Not like Handel or anything, just something that wasn't a hymn, but still had that classical sort of old-ish sound. My voice isn't at it's best trying to do the "pop" sounds of radio songs.

Any suggestions? What have you sung?
thanks!
Bianca.

I've always loved Webber's Pie Jesu.

and this song called How Beautiful... is an absolute TEAR JERKER.

I've been the soprano soloist/section leader at a Presbyterian (USA) church for 5 years now.

I personally like classical stuff. Mozart's Laudate Dominum (Solemn Vespers), Alleluia (Exultate Jubilate), Fauré's Pie Jesu (Requiem), anything like that. Although the only place I get to sing classically now is church, hence my preference for it. Smile
Psyches

Jason Robert Brown's Christmas Lullaby. It doesn't really sound exclusively chriostmas at all, in fact it's hard to imagine it sounding like a christmas carol in any setting. If not for the name, it wouldn't really be anything except a song that references Mother Mary and God.

It's really pretty and hymn-like with a touch of belt toward the end. I sang it at Xmas in July last year and at Xmas and am doing it again next Xmas because I'm tacky and lame.

But Christmas Lullaby by Jason Robert Brown is good.

Don't sing Hillsong or you will go straight to Hell. I'll meet you there.

OOOH! I'm on some of their albums though! Only they haven't got my name in the credits because I got excommunicated for shaggin the pastor's son. lol go Lukey.

I'm fairly regular singing baritone, tenor if needed in a PCUSA choir.
One work I like is Courtney and Red's Celebrate Life, from the Southern Baptists (published by Broadman) in the early 1970's. "In Remembrance of Me" from this work has made it into the current PCUSA hymnbook. A good female solo from this work is "I Quietly Turned to Him".

One day about 1974 I invited some of my SBC friends to go see a performance of Bach's B Minor Mass at an Episcopal Church. I suddenly realized that I would probably never again be so ecumenical - A Presby. inviting Baptists to a work in the RC tradition written by a Lutheran performed at an Episcopal church by a chorale probaby representing about every group imaginable.

I've been a cantor for years. I did both semi-traditional music (your standards by Marty Haugen, Bernadette Farrell, etc. - very Catholic) and some contemporary stuff. My signature song was "We Are One Body," which I frequently did as a Communion power-ballad.

As far as going for your particular style, there are so many Mass settings out there that there are bound to be a few that are perfect for your voice. My favorite, which I did most of the time, was the Mass of Saint Barbara, which is very interesting.

I used to sing at church, but the people there are really awful to me and I pretty much got kicked off the music team. I'm looking for a new church.

I\'m awesssome with sacred repertoire for choirs, but for solo/cantor, I can\'t really think of much off the top of my head. Faure\'s Pie Jesu is the first basic I\'d think of.

I am a soprano, and have done much soloist work at my (Presbyterian) church over the past 15 years. I was classically trained, and so lean more to that type of music, but have also done contemporary work as well.

I recently purchased a book that has a nice varied collection of songs from "art songs" and traditional sacred music to spirituals to concert arrangements of hymns (including several nice duets). It is "The Sacred Collection" for high voice available from Hal Leonard for $19.99.

Also look for anything arranged by Mark Hayes, he is amazing!

Thanks, everybody! I will look into those suggestions, especially that book, Melindaisy. I think that may be what I'm looking for.

Sorry about your church experience, Guava. Sometimes churches are the worst representations of Christ.

will check out that YouTube, right now.
