Anyone Can WhistleOk...here's the thing, I've listened to the original cast recording of Anyone Can Whistle...I REALLY didn't like it...even worse i couldn't believe Sondheim had written it. I was just wondering if anyone had seen or been in the show and knew more about it...besides the plot i mean. I know it failed after like 8 performances or something and I'm just really courious as to what this peice looks like on stage. Does anyone know or feel the same way i do?

I like the show alot. much of the music is just wonderful.."Everybody Says Dont", "come Play Wiz Me" "ive got You to Lean On" and the title song.
the "Simple" montage is aa priceless gem of a a scene.
It is flawed but if kept moving it plays quite well on stage.

Ask anyone who was around and they will all tell you the exact same thing- the book was DEEPLY flawed and caused the show to flounder. My daughter has used the title piece at recitals and brought the audience to tears  , so there are very good things about the music itself. Over the years, there has been much talk about re-working the book and putting the show up again, but I do wish they'd hurry.....

That's strange. I think several have mentioned how the title song kind of is Sondheim's theme song. It's beautiful when he sings it himself at the Scrabble Album or on the demo.

"Anyone Can Whistle" is an absolutely beautiful performance piece, I have used it several times. People always comment to me how much they enjoyed it and found it very moving. I also like "Everybody Says Don't".
It would be great to see a re-working of the book since so much of the music is very nice.

I've never seen the show, but "EVerybody Says DOn't" is a favorite of mine to sing.
