Anthony and Adam Coming Back

I remember reading that Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal are coming back to RENT on July 30th for an unspecified run. To me, this looks like an omen of the show closing, the original stars coming back and all that jazz. What do you think?

I think you should've included a link, and that I very well could add my own link, but... teach a man to fish and all that.

There's a thread about this in the Social Club already, but its all over broadway.com... Very Happy They'll be doing their run with American Idol's Tamyra Gray.

Yay!

I am glad Adam and Anthony are returning for a while, they add a wonderful degree of freshness to the show!

As for Tamyra, I can't say I am excited about her. Sorry fans. I just don't see her as Mimi.

Yes, 11-year-old freshness, much like old socks.

Just laughed out loud!

I think it'd be interesting to see them on stage rather than in the movie...
I wanna go. I'm sad now...I don't think it necessarily means the show is closing. Maybe they just wanted the originals back for a little bit because it would give more people a chance to see them.
Edit: Maybe they just wanted the originals back for a little bit because it would give more people a chance to see them before it closes if that is the case. I'm not making any solid predictions here.

Oh, for crying out loud! I hate fake optimism. I love the show, too, but there are four facts of life:

1) Shows lose topicality after eleven years.
2) How many fans can there possibly be to keep buying tickets?
3) When the celebrities sign on, usually in roles they don't fit at all, it's to boost ticket sales (case in point: just about anyone these days in Chicago).
4) When the originals return, it's friggin' over (case in point: Adam in Aida)!

And I hate to make people look like idiots, but "Maybe they just wanted the originals back for a little bit because it would give more people a chance to see them." Hmmm...didn't the movie serve that purpose for those who didn't see the OBC?

Case closed. Hopefully, show closed. RENTheads can then do it themselves. Have a nice life.

Next time, all you moderators, tell me it's out of line and I will fix it myself! No arbitrary crap! Thanks a bunch--BMHS
pish123c

of course it's closing.

i give it two more years TOPS.
It's just like Chicago, or any other show that starts to cast celebs, it's to boost ticket sales.

Soon we'll have Justin Timberlake as Mark and Jennifer Hudson as Joanne.

True...

Well yeah, this seems like an obvious closer for Rent. All good things must come to an end. That's the way it was with Cats. No matter how much I love it, it's not going to be back on Broadway for a while. There will be Rent tours and other performances.

...Say what you want, but I like Adam and Anthony coming back because they're GOOD. Eleven-year-old socks are looking pretty good to me. These men are talented. Adam has one of the most gorgeous voices I have ever heard (you all need to listen to the Aida soundtrack).

As I always say, it's an opinion. Let's run with it...

As for casting movie stars/singers on Broadway, it honestly bothers me. Musical theatre is a totally separate world from both movies and the music industry...

There is no Aida soundtrack.
Gwen

To clear up my response, what I meant was maybe it won't close immediately after their run. Maybe it will, but I'm not making any solid predictions. Anyways, I think it's good to bring a few originals people back for the last run if that's what it is.

I know there is. I have it.
You look it up on Amazon.Com, there it is plain and simple.

^ d'oh!

I think you mean "cast recording." Doesn't bother me, really, but in some cases it is very important to make the distinction between a soundtrack - a term which really applies only to a recording from a motion picture - and a cast recording. Smile

Oh wow. Picky picky. Smile

But I understand if Rent closes. I've been through this stuff before.
norayouadora

Lol, you may think it's picky, but it's important to identify which recording you're talking about... For example, if you wanted to discuss Mimi's performance on the original broadway cast recording of Rent, but you called it the "soundtrack," everyone else would be discussing Rosario Dawson while you're talking about DRV. Cheesy example, I know, but I don't want you to think that TVAW is just being petty for the sake of nitpicking. This is a commonly made mistake in MT (I used to do it, too), but it's easy to correct. Very Happy

Anyways, back to the topic of this thread...
*BroadwayLights*

That's awesome! I love those guys <3
DramaRobin2002

While I don't think that Rent is going to have much time left, I also don't think that the stunt casting and the return of two OBCers really means much in this case. Rent has been stunt casting and bringing back OBCers for years.

Carl Anderson, Ted Neeley and Barry Dennen have all done JCS over the years.

Yul Bryner did The King and I until the day he died... and shortly there afterwords.

CATS ran on Broadway for 19 years. PHANTOM is on a run that will last for the next 5,000 years. Smile

If RENT closes (which I doubt), the theatre could house maybe a revival of oh... STARLIGHT EXPRESS maybe?

Andy.
What Is This Feeling?

Oh I hope its not over yet. Lol I'm gonna try to go see Adam and Ant, hopefully. But idk, what next April it will be 12 years? Surprised so idont know... anyone else think it is running out of steam?
2Day4u2morrow4me

No. It my perfect world it will run forever but that won't happen. I think it's doing well, it's not selling out every night but there not losing there touch. and I think it will last a while. and I don't think that them coming back is a clue that it's closing. I think it's to bring up sales and so people can see them. It's not like they are celebrities out side of the Rent world. Take Brooke Shields in Chicago, That doesn't make sense and Hairspray has had, Haley Duff, Ashley Parker Angel, Alexa Vega, and they are still going.

But I think that's why it's still running - so much stunt casting.

Of course, with the movie coming out this summer, they will get more people coming to see the show because of that, then they'll go through the works... probably have Nicole Blonski play Tracy, and maybe even Zac Efron play Link. They would get TONS of money from that. I would also like to think that John Travolta will play Edna, but I can't see that happening any time soon, at least.

Well, if she lost some weight... I always pegged Justin for more of a Roger, actually...

As for the health of the show, as of last January, you could get tickets in the second row center off the TKTS board two hours before the show began. Trust me, I know. They were the best tickets I ever got for that price. How is that selling well?

Anthony and Adam are so awesome! Just incase nobody has heard yet, they're extending their stay until Oct. 7. Surprised
Not Dead Yet

I'm never paying 300 dollars for a front mezzanine ticket again, even if it is Adam and Anthony. Stupid stage door was crowded with movie fans that didn't even GO SEE THE SHOW! They would just show up and shove people so I went "---- this!" pushed people away, got my autographs and left since it started pouring. Worst SD ever.
