another Q about headshotsJust got my headshots done and my photographer just gave me the 8X10 prints of the pics without my name at the bottom. Is this common practice?Even if it's not, I'm stuck with a few 8X10 prints that don't have my name on them. Is this horrible and should I use the digital files I have to re-format and re-print the pics with my name on the bottom? Or can I just glue my 8X10 print to my 8 1/2 X 11 resume and put my name on that extra inch of resume below the print? |

Re: another Q about headshots
Yes, but not always necessary for some auditions
I don't think it's worth the effort. |

I have seen them with the names stuck on a properly printed sticker.
You may not want to but its an option. |

The headshot photographer will usually give the proofs to you without the names on them...What you need to do is take them to a printer or send them off to a printer...The printer is the one that puts the name on the headshot and does the touch-ups...

also cut and trim resume and STAPLE it to the back of the headshot. Do not use glue. Also your photographer should have had your name on the prints they gave you...tisk tisk

^Actually, no...(on the photographer should have the name on your photo...)
That is for the touch-up/printing people to do...The place I go in NY, Reproductions, does all of that...(And they're the most reasonable and best, in my opinion...DON'T GO TO PRECISION PHOTO!) They also have an LA location. Your proofs from the photographer usually don't have the name on them. I also agree with staples, but double-stick tape is also okay, as long as your name is on your headshot and you put your phone number and email on the back of your headshot. |

Sow hat should I do about the 8x10 prints I have that don't have my name on 'em? Put a sticker on the front of the headshot? Scrap em and print new ones that DO have my name on em? What?
Don't wanna look unprofessional... |

Are you saying that your photographer touched them up AND printed 100's of them? I would usually advise against that...
When you get your headshots done professionally, you will usually get a disk and an 8x10 of the shots you chose from your photographer (You keep the 8x10's without names on them as a reference once your shots are reproduced in the 100's).... You then take the disk to a printing place, like Reproductions ( http://www.reproductions.com/ ), Modern Age, etc. and have them touched up a bit, if needed, and you choose the font and format of how you would like the headshots to be... Then they print out 100's of them for you, with the name on them... |

Usually a photographer works with the person retouching hte photograph.

^That's not necessarily true...some photographers will do all the touch-up work themselves, others will send emails to the printing place- telling them where the problem spots are in the photo, but a really great place like Reproductions will have trained pros who will do the right amount of retouching and know when there's too much retouching done without having to work closely with the original photographer. Really all they need as a reference is to look at what the actor looks like in real life...Often, the photographer just wants to take a great shot of you, regardless if it still looks like you or not...(which, to be perfectly honest, is the problem with 80-90% of headshots out there...)

Eh dammit now I gotta pay for retouching? BLECH... I don't even know of services like that around here. Do the places you mentioned earlier work nationally? For example, could I send them the digital files of the headshots and they'd print em and send em? Or would it cost me $8000 in shipping to send me 100 headshots?

I know...that's how I felt when I first got my headshots! I was like...WTF??? You mean I pay this much just to get the proofs and now I have to spend another $300 or so on reproducing them?!
Yep...you have to figure that into the cost! This should help...also...do your research. There are a lot of other places that also do mail order stuff...just be careful... Here's the link that would work for you regarding their mail order procedures: http://www.reproductions.com/LA/HTML_format.html |

Thank you for the link Jazzy.
This is my first time getting professional headshots. They've all been ghetto homemade shots till now. I didn't realize how many steps the process would take! Since I really won't go through 100 headshots in a year or even two years (and I plan to get new ones every 2 years), I'm just gonna see if they can retouch and reformat them and I'll print them myself. (My brother-in-law has some very nice printing equipment.) Thanks for the help yall. You're the best. : ) |

I use ABC Pictures- they can print from a digital photo, but for the first one I mailed them a high-quality proof and let them scan it. I get 250 for $75, and higher multiples are even cheaper. THEN you can just put the litho into your computer printer and print your resume directly on the back- it's slick!
Edit: He'res the link to the place I use. They also do postcards and composites and business cards, etc., and will print whatever text u want. (i just do my name) http://www.abcpictures.com/index.asp |

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but how much should I expect to pay for headshots? I'm considering getting some done, but I really dont have much money to spare. I have seen photographers offering basic packages for £70 (about $140) but I'm worried that they'll look cheap and unprofessional. If I really dont have the money would I be better off just getting a good digital camera and getting a friend to take some photos? I wouldnt be doing many auditions right now, but I'd like to try a few. Also, a couple of my friends want to invite agents to a showcase we're doing this summer & we're thinking of sending all of our CVs out together so it's more likely that they'll come, so I'd want a headshot for that. |
