Another 'Charlie Brown' audition

My local theatre is doing 'You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown' this coming October/November, and Linus has always been a dream role of mine. Singing songs from the show is acceptable here (sometimes even preferable or requested), but as Linus's song doesn't have a great amount of singing, I doubt I'll go that way... Any ideas? I've been trying to think of some song ideas but I really can't think of any songs that fit Linus. Thanks for any help.

For a Linus audition, I would choose "Singin' in the Rain" from the film Singin' in the Rain or one of the "If I Only Had a..."'s from Wizard of Oz. "If I Only Had The Nerve" fits his character, but "If I Only Had a Brain" is longer.

i actually think the song 'if i only had a brain' sounds like linus's song a bit, but has more singing in it, so that would definitely be a good choice.
Baker

Hmmm... I'm leaning towards "Singin' in the Rain," actually, because I used to do "If I Only Had A Brain" for almost every audition, so this director has seen me perform it about 5 times...

"Giants in the sky" did it for me Smile But i wasn't going for linus particularly... i was going for charlie... so idk if that was really helpful. ^.^

giants in the sky is not a good audition song - the accompaniment is too difficult to sightread, and that song is hard to do with an accompanist unless you work with that accompanist for a while on it.

if you've already done 'if i only had a brain' for the director, then definitely DON'T do it again. show him you've got variety.

'singin' in the rain' would probably be good. i'm trying to think of a good anthony rapp song to use, because he played linus on the broadway revival, but i can't think of any of his songs that would be good.

I sang "Giants" once for auditions and it went extremely well... Our accompanist was amazing though, and I'd worked with him before, so yeah...

Our director is a she this time. Wink

I'm definitely keeping an eye out for Singin' in the Rain sheet music... Oh, and by the way, Anthony Rapp was Charlie Brown in the revival, not Linus. Very Happy

ah...am i thinking of the original, then?

because i've got a million versions of 'my blanket and me,' and under artist is always 'anthony rapp.' and i know it's him, i know his voice...

hmm.

Uh, no, as far as I know Anthony has never played Linus...
CYTthespian

ah. well. i'm just a little blonde, then.

glad i found out before i said it to anyone else...

So I just got back from my first lesson with a new vocal teacher... and our main focus today was finding a good song for YAGMCB auditions... Singin' in the Rain didn't do it, and we tried The Bear Necessities but that didn't work either... so we more or less settled on The Lullaby of Broadway from 42nd Street... do you guys think that would work well? Thanks.

Isn't that song really overdone for auditions?

Well- nevertheless, if it works for you, and if you sound good- go for it. It's really all about finding the right combination of what sounds good in your voice plus finding a song that fits the style of the show you're auditioning for. If you're comfortable with it- stick to it.

But don't forget- an audition is more than just sounding great- you have to sell the song, too!

Best of luck!
Baker

I live in small-town Ohio. The only things overdone here are Over the Rainbow and My Favorite Things.

"Lullaby of Broadway" is good ...something some what upbeat would be good..I too need an audition song for YAGMCB in a WEEK (ahh) I'm going for either Sally or Lucy and am thinking "I Enjoy Being a Girl" (I know over done but I know it..or "Let Me Entertain You" from Gypsy...feedback would be great..and Baker I am not tying to steal your thread jsut knock two birds with one stone!
Baker

No problem. My sister is auditioning for Sally and she's planning on singing "Notice Me, Horton" from Seussical. "Popular" is another common one, as both Sally and Galinda were Kristin Chenoweth characters, but that song is often overdone. "I Enjoy Being a Girl" is a good choice, I think.

Sorry to double-post, but it has been a while...

So the auditions came, but it turned out they were refusing to let people under the age of 18 audition, so I just turned in an application in case they didn't find what they wanted in the 8 adults who auditioned. Well, there were altogether 4 people under 18 who auditioned/turned in an application (1 17-year-old girl, 1 17-year-old guy, myself [16], and my sister [14]). I guess they didn't find what they wanted in one of the 2 adult women who auditioned, so they bent their own "firm" rule and let the 17-year-old girl audition, but not the rest of us. The girl got in, and, clearly, I didn't and neither did the other under-18's. I definitely feel like if they felt the need to bend the rule for her, they should have let all of us audition.

d'oh!

But in the end, I didn't audition so therefore I didn't get in... Thanks for everybody's help anyway.

Hey Baker, is you sister "The Drama Queen"?

If so, she told me about that audition! I think it's super weird that the director didn't put on the audition notice that it was 18 and over only!! And then she bends the rule for only 1 girl? Strange...and such a bummer!!
The Drama Queen

^ yeah, we're sibs Smile

there was never really a "notice", news about these things just kind of filters around here. The information was posted on the theatre's website, but it has been very untrustworthy (mistakes are all over the place) and the Over 18 rule wasn't on there until around a week ago, so we didn't really trust it, but to be sure we checked with the director and she had no knowledge of the restriction until we asked her. The whole thing was just a mess, and the girl who got Sally was indeed, under 18, but just barely.
