The local theatre is having auditions for WSS this summer and I want to audition. I have a really strong alto voice and have no problem hitting higher notes . I'm a really good dancer too- the question I have is could I play Anita even though I am Black? My complexion is about the color of Cinnamon and my hair- in a certain style- can be curly. When my hair is like this I am asked if I am Latina, but I want to know before I start really boning up for this audition if I really even have a shot?

^That's along the lines of what I was thinking. Especially for a local theater, I think you would have a shot. White girls play Anita all the time, so why shouldn't you be able to? Good luck.

I'm sure you can play Anita with your looks! The question is that you can sing, dance and act the part!

if people ask you if you're latino with the curly hair, definitely play that up at the audition. when i picture my ideal anita in my head, she's just spunky with a fantastic voice and dance skills...the physical follows that. the audience will believe if you play up your talent! (and so will the directors!)

Just to point this out...There are LOTS of Puerto Ricans who are black and consider themselves black!

i think because you have darker skin you'll have more of a chance than say a fari skinned person because the directors will be able to visualize you in the part easier.

Just own it! Sing your ass off, come in strong and think color blind casting! to be honest im spanish but i look white, and i was conciderd for anita up untill the end, i didnt get the role but what im trying to say is if you can sing the part dance the part and you really feel the part who's to say anita cant be black! Break a leg!
