Andrew Lloyd Webber has cancer..

http://entertainment.uk.msn.com/celebrity/news/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=150442914&GT1=61504&ocid=today

I think I speak on all of us, that we wish him a quick and successful recovery.

(Let's not all bash his work? Whether you like it or not, he's made a huge contribution to the theatre world.)

EDIT: Spelling!
Felix Felicis

That's horrible news... I wish him a speedy recovery.
Tell me on a Sunday indeed.

This is really scary news. Although I find a lot of his shows very annoying, I believe he's a very nice person, and I wish him all well personally.

Probably. In which case I'm evil as well.

I hope he's fine. He'll certainly get the very best possible treatment. All the TV exposure in recent years does seem to have worn off the worst of his paralytic shyness, and he seems quite a nice person really.

Because of a professionnal decision, you're not wishing him a fast recovery?

I'm not gonna say much about that quote, Yakko, except that it was useless for the thread and totally disrespectful...

As for Love Never Dies, can we just wait the premiere to judge it? (He hasn't been mentionning the Robo Christine in his recent interview about the show, btw)

Just because you don't respect someone doesn't mean that you should want them to have cancer.

I, personally, hope the best for Mr. Webber. As crazy as he may be, his shows were what first got me into theatre. Best wishes!

There are a few posts in this thread that make me think really badly about their authors (we all know which ones). Hopefully they don't realize what terrible things they are saying, and don't really mean them. Maybe they think that by making a brazen comment instead of a supportive one, they look cool? Or maybe they don't understand how serious cancer is? I don't know, I'm just looking for a reason to believe that these people are in fact NOT the nasitiest shit of the earth. Because if they really are glad to hear that someone has cancer, I can't think of another way to describe it.
WickedToo

I wish him a speedy recovery as well.

Oh man. =/ I'm not his biggest fan but I hope he recovers soon...

Speedy recovery to ALW.

As a general note, celebrating when someone gets cancer does not make you cool. It basically makes you a douche canoe. Or a douche SAILBOAT.
Just sayin'.

All I have to say is...karma is a bitch.

I was a fan in my youth. I have since moved on, however I do hold a special place for him if for no other reason than opening the mind of a seven-year-old boy to the broader world of musical theatre. A speedy recovering is hopefully coming his way.

I'm glad you were able to step back and see just what level of retard your original statement was.

I mean personally other than JCS I'm not a fan of his work at all...detest it really...but to go as far as to wish that the reality of a slow deteriorating death awaited him is just horrible.

Omg, that's awful! =(

His shows and melodies have thoroughly entertained me throughout the years. And, as an orchestrator, he is a genius.

I hope they attack this disease aggressively. I wish him the best.
Disney-Bway27

I wish him a speedy recovery. Phantom of the Opera was the first musical I became obsessed with, so although I'm not the biggest ALW fan, it's part of my childhood. And he's an incredible orchestrator.

Same with me Elliott...if it wasn't for Phantom, I don't think I would have become as obsessed with performing/musical theater as I am today. Now I realize it's not as brilliant as I thought it was, but it still holds a very special place in my heart.

And I must say I am really shocked at certain poster's behaviors in this thread. It's really disheartening to see people happy or laughing about someone getting cancer, especially since we all just lost someone who was an amazing positive spirit on these boards to cancer.

Grow up.

I am sure he will be fine though, I am so glad they got it early. Hope it all goes well for the old fella.

I agree that most of musical theater friends were hooked up by one of his show (I did too!!)

Cats got me into ALW... then Jesus Christ Superstar got me into musical theater and it's now my biggest passion.

Recover as fast as The Woman in White closed on Broadway!! (People!... I'm kidding)

ALW, I'm one of the few here who believe in Love Never Dies, recover fast so you can make the best out of it!

Luckily, the reports say his prostate cancer was diagnosed in its early stages. A survival rate indicates the percentage of patients who live a specific number of years after the cancer is diagnosed. For prostate cancer, the 10-year survival rate is about 93% and the 15-year survival rate is about 77%. After 15 years, survival rates stabilize. Research indicates that men who are diagnosed with low-grade prostate cancers have a minimal risk of dying from prostate cancer up to 20 years after diagnosis. Since Webber is around 61 years old, with luck, he will still have a long life, and could reasonably be expected to see his 80's if it is indeed contained early stages of the disease. We wish him well, but do not think any of you need be unduly alarmed.

Well said...I'll add that I've known multiple people diagnosed with prostate cancer, including my father, and all of them are in complete remission.

I think my favorite line of Webber's is the "A New Argentina" section in the final Montage.

i thought i would be the only one to post something dark here, but i was gonna say that it's karma for the sequel. hehe.

It's responses like the one above that are completely uncalled for. ALW may not be our favorite composer but he has freaking cancer, for God's sake. I don't think ANYONE here should be applauding or laughing at him having cancer when we've all seen how destructive it can be with our beloved Robin.

Yes. God doesn't cause cancer, nature does. What kind of God do you worship?

I'll admit I'm not the biggest ALW fan but he has certainly made a huge contribution to musical theatre and I do find some of his work enjoyable. This really has nothing to do with him having cancer though. I wish him, just like anyone else with cancer, a full, speedy recovery. People are discussing his work and contributions to theatre as if they are deciding whether he deserves to have cancer or not or whether they are gonna wish him a recovery - which is kinda sick.
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

None, actually. I don't believe in a supreme being or any kind of order to the universe other than natural law. (But that's a discussion for another thread.)

I'm very sorry to hear this. I know we've lost so many people to cancer in the past few years. But I still wish ALW the very best and a speedy recovery. I do hope he'll make it to supervise an official published vocal score of Cats with all the variants of numbers...

Laughing at cancer isn't darkly humorous, it's sadistic. Your sense of humor sucks.
ActingDude17

For everyone badmouthing him...you try composing a musical that runs for 21 years on Broadway. Then get back to me. I may not be the hugest fan of his work, or Phantom even, but the man is talented. There's no denying that. Did I also mention he's a fellow human being?
random_person

Having a morbid sense of humour is one thing, but whatever you may think of his artistic output, what exactly has the man done to deserve cancer? I for one cannot think of anything. Creating musicals that people may find hackneyed is not a moral wrongdoing by any means, let alone something that merits ridicule for being diagnosed with a serious medical condition.

However...if you choose to be a tool about the entire issue...be my guest. I don't think anyone will stop you...or care to.

This community had just lost a beloved member who had been battling cancer and all the people cracking jokes and trying to look so clever in their dislike of another person who is going to be fighting the same battle disgusted me.

Update

Andrew Lloyd Webber was admitted to hospital last night with a "postoperative infection following surgery to remove his prostate three weeks ago". The operation was apparently successful and it looks as if he will be released after a few days once the infection has been treated.

Again, only wishes for a speedy recovery to him.
