Bad decision...

Steven Spielberg to Remake Mary Poppins

Ugh... what's the point? This is a bad decision.

I'm pretty much against remakes, or revivals, of anything unless they have something new to add to the original material.

For example, the stage versions of 'Hairspray' and 'The Producers' I feel, expanded and added to their original sources.

A remake of 'Mary Poppins', while an interesting notion, is not exactly necessary.

I think the stage version certainly does mould the original Mary Poppins material into something new. But while I have no problem with the musical remakes of The Producers and Hairspray, I think that a remake of Mary Poppins would just be a futile exercise.

Maybe it's because Mary Poppins was a musical film in the first place? But maybe it's also because the original film is so beautifully crafted, cast, scripted and performed. The only thing that could be added is more special effects work and that wouldn't really achieve anything or add anything profoundly more wonderful to the film.
