I think its pretty fantastic....what a dance routine near the end, great imagery, music and atmospherics.....In saying all this I think the chemistry between Gene Kelly and the girl (cant remember her name) glued the story together. For a stage production you'd have to have the same good chemistry.

the "girl" is the great Leslie Caron. most famous for her starring role in Gigi.
and lets not forget French Legend Georges Guetery singing "I'll Build a Stairway To Paradise" and "S'Wonderful"".

This was one of the classiest movie musicals of all time. It won the Oscar as best picture the yeare it came out (early 1950s - can't remember exactly which year). The "funky" music is classic Gershwin! Many people consider this movie to be the epitomy of Gene Kelley's dance style - if I remember correctly he choreographed the movie too. Leslie Caron made her big breakthrough in this film too. She went on to star in Gigi.

And dont forget the brilliant Oscar winning screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner.

Which beggers the question! Why isn't it on Broadway?

maybe because to do justice to the title piece would require at least a 40 piece orchestra.
BTW it was this film that made a standard out of "Love Is Here To Stay". "Love Walked In" was considered the hit from the 1938 Goldwyn Follies and "Love Is Here To Stay" was pretty much overlooked for 14 years.

I'm sorry but I really think that the best scene in the whole thing is Gene Kelly singing "I Got Rhythm" with those little kids. It's just...delightful.
