Monsieur D'Arque

An All-Star Tribute To RENT

with the upcoming movie and RENT's good-old alt-rock/punk-pop songs, this movie may spread the songs of RENT to be a phenom past the theatre world. if so, it can only be expected that some major bands will eventually do a RENT cover album. if so, which non-theater bands or singers would you want to cover the songs from RENT?

Rent: metallica
Tune-Ups: Weezer
Out Tonight: Lita Ford, eighties hair-metal chick (or anyone but Avril or Ashlee)
One Song Glory: U2
La Vie Boheme: all-star group with solos from all the bands on the album

"Light My Candle" should be on it, but I don't know who'd sing it.

EDIT: Gwen Stefani could sing Mimi's part.
BLESStheLORD86

I'm looking at this with a very popish eye... If they were to get celebs, who would they aim for and who would fit with/be able to sing the style of each specific song. I could see something like this...

Nelly Furtado and Micheal Buble- Without You

Xtina and Alicia Keys- Take me or Leave Me

Kelly Clarkson- Out Tonight

Seasons of Love- Aretha Franklin

brilliant choices... i must admit that i would have liked to hear Ray Charles at least guest star on Seasons, but with him being dead, not a good idea.

An All-Star Tribute To RENT

I doubt it. The supposed cross-over appeal was expected to achieve that kind of effect when the show made such big waves when it first opened. I don't think it will be any different this time; the songs work in the context of the show but aren't really chart material. But it's a nice fantasy....

And let's all hope that this would turn out better than the Starlight Express pop cover album...
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

I know one thing for damn sure: Jack Black will be on that motherf---ing tribute.

"I'll Cover You (Reprise)" - Stevie Wonder, perhaps.

The only problem with All-Star Tributes is that is sounds too much like the original. I think it should be similar, but not the same.
Monsieur D'Arque

yeah. like people who can still suggest the song's spirit, but put a new spin on it, whether a different interpretation, or just the different feel that comes from a different performer. for instance, look at the tribute albums to bands like Queen or Oingo Boingo... they are quite different than the originals, but still get the attitude and meaning of teh song across.
Brother Marvin Hinten, S.

Alright, new idea. All-star tribute, in my case, equals stars record the entire show, as a studio recording, so to speak, designed to sell well. Requires a bit of acting, which shouldn't be too hard for some of the people I've brought in.

CAST
ROGER -- Jack Black
MARK -- Anthony Rapp (no one better, I'm sorry)
MARK'S MOM -- Joan Cusack
MIMI -- Beyonce Knowles (perhaps she'd be good)
BENNY -- undecided
MAUREEN -- Courtney Love (you try and imagine this not working, once she gets a singing lesson and someone takes away her needle)
JOANNE -- Tracey Chapman
COLLINS -- undecided
ANGEL -- Jai Rodriguez
HOMELESS PEOPLE, LIFE SUPPORT GROUP, WAITERS, COPS, ENSEMBLE -- Toxic Audio (that a capella group who just did the HAIR benefit)

Yeh...I would've had this better planned out. Better, if I hadn't taken sugar beforehand and lost enthusiasm. If anyone finds a good Collins and Benny, page me.

I was about to buy the tribute to Queen after seeing what bands were on it. Thank god I previewed it first. It sounds exactly like Queen. And the one with the We Will Rock You OLC and Constantine Maroulis sounded just like the We Will Rock You OLC.

To Honor Rent?

First Of ALL!
YOU CANT PLACE MUSIC ARTISTS IN A MOVIE OF SUCH CLASS.....EVER SINCE DUKES OF HAZZARD.......JESSICA SIMPSON WAS TERRIBLE IN IT!

A TRIBUTE ALBUM IS A GOOD IDEA! Here are my ideas for the singers

Mark-Nick Lachey
Roger- Jon Bon Jovi Or Bono
Mimi-Alicia Keys
Maureen-Christina Aguilera
Joanne- Dont know Very Happy
Collins-Stevie Wonder

Calm down killer!

With the exception of maybe Pink and Kelly Clarkson, all of those people have been performing for years, some even since childhood. I wasn't trying to cast a movie, just offering a different angle. I feel that the ability to sing the part takes precedence over acting ability, especially with such a song driven show as "Rent." I just saw the show again last night, and apparently the casting director felt the same. The actor who played Roger could sing very well, but was very unexpressive overall. The most important part is that the actors are comfortable onstage, and I'm sure all of these people are.

As a diehard Queen fan, that tribute album sounds NOTHING LIKE QUEEN!!!

Enough said.

I really have to disagree with you on that. Rent is not so much song-driven as character-driven. If you have an actor who can sing all Angel's notes but doesn't endear Angel to the audience how do you think his death is going to affect the audience? If you have a Collins who can hit all the notes but not put the passion into I'll Cover You (Reprise), it's not going to be nearly as powerful. Yes, Rent does need good voices but acting is just as important to all the characters.
Monsieur D'Arque

I thought of a few others...

"Halloween": Stephen Lynch
"I'll Cover You (Reprise)": Elton John
"Tango: Maureen": Voltaire (The lyrics would have to change to make it a solo, but I can't think of anyone better than Voltaire to pull this off)
"Your Eyes": Jack Black (with a straight face, he could do it)
"La Vie Boheme": Baz Luhrman (Well, he'd have to mastermind it)
"I'll Cover You": Huey Lewis and Cyndi Lauper (It'd be hard to sell a gay-love single to the American mainstream scene, and besides, Idina and Taye sing it all the time.)
