Amount of dancing? How much dancing is there in OUAM? I'm just wondering because I have an audition for the show in March, and I'm not a trained dancer, so naturally I'm curious as to the amount of dancing in the show.

I think there is a fair amount of dancing.
Opening For a Princess and Spanish Panic are both dance scenes, plus the director could add dancing in Song of Love, Shy, Minstrel Jester and I, Normandy or any others.

Depending on your theatre though, it doesn't have to be crazy mc CRAZY dancing. I was Fred in a Community Theatre production and I am not in any way a trained dancer...and we managed.

A crazy good dancer should play the Jester though...Very Soft Shoes.

VERY true, didn't think about that.

Same here. I completely forgot the Jester. I think that the Jester, the chorus and the featured dancers Lady Beatrice and Sir Harold should be the best dancers in the show.

I was actually going to audition for the Jester because I can really rock the song, but then I found out about the whole dancing thing, and I was kinda like, whefbsdknfckjdsbfksd....I think I'll audition for the king and wizard. They don't sing or dance really. lol

You can still be the Jester even if you aren't much of a dancer. His dance doesn't have to be terribly complex.

Okay, so we've established that "Opening" and "Panic" are definitely dance scenes, whereas the others you mentioned *could* be dance scenes. Are there any others that always have been dance scenes?
Also, is the choreography for Very Soft Shoes always the same, or does it depend on the production?

We had quite a bit of dancing in Shy (not too complex though) because there is a break in the singing that is clearly meant for dancing. And the cast danced a fair ammount in Opening for a Princess too.
Very Soft Shoes varies. Our Jester made up her own dance which was pretty neat.

Most of the songs in the show can just have organized movement, like "Opening," "Shy," and "The Song of Love." It doesn't have to be really complex dancing at all. Just throw in some box steps here and there and you've got 'er made! The only song that has to be a dance number is The Spanish Panic, which doesn't have to be anything impressive. I think it's better if it's just crazy. Like, have a super simple routine that speeds up throughout the whole song, until no one can do it at the end. None of the "dance" songs are serious, anyways. Just have fun with it!

There's no specific choreography traditional to it, if that's what you mean. It'll just be whatever your choreographer comes up with.

Is "Panic" mainly an ensemble piece or is it all the principal characters?

some of the leads(Fred, Dauntless, I think Harry and Mabelle(she's not a lead, but she is Harry's partner)) are in it but mostly ensemble.

Know that it will likely include some variation of "Flip your skirts, open, close, right, right, right," as that is in the script. I've never seen a production that didn't expand on this, though.

I think it depends on your cast size. In ours, EVERYONE was in this number except for Lady Larken. We only had a cast of 14 though. The Queen started out dancing with the Wizard, but during a 'difficult' step, the Wizard spun out of control and the Queen Spun into the arms of the King, she shreaked, and they both ran off. This was early on in the dance, so the majority of the show was Fred, Dauntless, the Jester, Minstrel, our three ladies in waiting and our 2 Knights.
In a bigger cast, I think the only principals who "need" to be in this dance number are Fred, Harry and Dauntless. I think the Jester probably should be as well.
