Amateur productions

Tell me about them Razz

Has anyone been in one? Seen one? Heard of one? Have pictures? Etc.

Are the rights actually out? Confused

(and no, I'm not planning on doing one myself Razz)

As far as I know the rights aren't out yet. Here in the States at least there is a different version of Phantom, not written by ALW...I've heard of amateur productions of that, but now the ALW version.

Yes, apparently they won't let there be amateur productions while it's on Broadway, because they don't want people going there instead of to the Broadway show.

It really annoys me that living in Australia I can neither participate in a productrion or see the Broadway one!!!

I see... I think that it's a good case since I can't imagine how any amateur production would be pulling off the Falling Chandelier or the Boat trip thingy...

The rights for Les Mis are out and that is still running (US Tour and still in the West End)...

In the US and UK the rights for Les Mis are only out for the SE version. I've not heard of an SE version of ALW's Phantom. [Not that I'm an expert.]

Also happyguava, you're LUCKY, Aussies have the full rights to do Les Mis, adults and all.

It is, however, possible to do a concert version, is it not?

Our school kinda did an amateur version. Because we are too cheap to buy rights to anything, for the last two years our school has done these random compliations of various musical numbers. Brilliant thing is that if you use less than 20% of an entire show, then you don't have to buy the rights (or at least- that's what I was told). One of our numbers last year was "Little Lotte/The Mirror/Angel of Music" from Phantom. As a stagehand I am qualified to tell you it looked very amateur.
The "boat" was essetially a dolly we use to move sets, painted black with a black block on it that Christine sat on. The Phantom used a sawed off broom handle to "row" the boat, which was actually pulled across the stage by a crew member, under the "cover" of a fog machine. It was interesting to say the least.

I'm pretty glad amateur rights aren't released. Can you imagine how butchered the show would be? So few schools could pull it off well. I know my school could pull off the female singers, but we have no male singers. Tech isn't even an issue- we have a great tech crew, plus the college tech crew and a gigantic theater. But can you imagine how many crappy chandelier crashes and boat trips there would be? I think it's better if the rights weren't released.
