Am I seeing things?

In the CATS film, I swear I see two Grizbella's and three Deutoronomy's!

I thought I saw her in Prologue in addition to her later scenes.

As for Deutoronomy, in addition to his main scenes: is that Ken Page as a differen t cat (who never reappears) in Prologue?
Is he IN the Macavity fight scene? Because he appears to the cats, then magically turns into Macavity (who is in another part of the stage in that scene)

I'm confused. Help? My brain is about to explode.

Grizabella is in the Prologue as a younger version of herself.

Old D is Macavity in the Old D suit, he's trying to trick the other cats after he abducts Old D and take over in his stead.

Both of these pop up in the stage versions.

It's best to think of the Prologue as a non sequitur to the show. It's an introduction. You'll notice that the Rum Tum Tugger lacks his mane. The reason for that, and the chorus versions of Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella (and Gus/Growltiger/Bustopher Jones) is to get them into the opening numbers without giving away the 'special' parts of their characters. Would Grizabella be as ghastly if we saw her in her costume before her song? Would Old Deuteronomy be as joyous a sight if here his full costume for the opening? Would Tugger be so striking when the first notes of his song play if we'd seen the mane before?

Probably not.

I tend to think of the characters as not even being 'themselves' until the invitation happens. Sure, you can identify them as Munkustrap, Bombalurina, and Bill Bailey... but does it really matter what the character is individually like? Not in the prologue.

The Video...

In the video (Film), there is a confusing point in the introduction of Old Deuteronomy just before the Macavity Fight Scene. Macavity is seen motioning "Old Deuteronomy" in - almost as a present. "See, guys? No harm, no foul... I'm giving him back to you..."

When Old Deuteronomy comes in - that is Ken Page... Bryn is not that big!
Shortly after, especially when Demeter "knows" this is not Old Dee, we see Old Deuteronomy go through an instant weight program - that is Bryn Walters (Macavity/Plato) in the Old Dee suit.

Oh thank you for that. I thought/knew it was Page for a couple of seconds.

Wait... Macavity is played by the same guy who plays Plato? Does this happen onstage? Must be quite a costume/make-up change if it does happen live.

Wait... I thought it was the swing, Richard Armitage, who was under the Old Deuteronomy suit. It's Ken Page? Are you sure?

And as for the stage version, it is a lot of work for the actor. It's not always Plato who plays Macavity though, sometimes it's Admetus or one of the other lesser males. Also, sometimes the person who plays Macavity also plays Rumpus Cat, in addition to Plato. So whoever plays Macavity is very good at changing costume. But I expect the make-up change isn't that much of a problem. Not after you've done your make-up a million times.

The Video

Remember that we are watching a "filmed" perfromance. Performers have plenty of time between takes to check makeup, change costume, and the like. Now, I always thought Ken Page started the Macavity scene and then Bryn Walters took over... You cannot get a good look at his face, but the size is right. And since he is already wearing the costume... Not 100% sure...

I believe Keith Wilson (Final Broadway Macavity/Plato/Rumpus Cat) indicated that during a performance, he had to wear the Macavity costume over the Plato one... During the video, you can cut the shot, let the performer change and then begin the scene... Keith did not have that luxury...

Hmm... yeah you're right, he does have the right size to be Ken Page... But then what's the swing for? d'oh!

Oh, and while I'm thinking of it, thanks for teaching me how to quote, Rumble. You did it a while ago, so you might not even remember doing it, but I didn't get a chance to thank you then as my PM was and is being very uncooperative. I've felt bad about it, and now I can finally thank you! Hope you'll see this... Smile
