Am I right to be worried?

Because of my cancer returning, I've stepped away from our school show as musical director/choreographer/costumer (we were going to do HONK!)

At first, the director (who canNOT choreograph and is NOT musical) was going to do a straight play. But she has a total of 8 boys and 12 girls who SIGNED UP (didn't even have auditions yet) so she has decided to do a show she's always wanted to.

You guessed it. Into the Woods.

I told her that we did NOT have the personnel for the show. That I would not dare try to musical direct it with the folks we have. That Sondheim is the most challenging writer of musicals ever. She has enlisted a mom who plays piano.

I told her the costumes were a little bit complex, and should be archetypal, and the Wolf alone was a chore. She's having everyone provide their own, and she'll coordinate them.

I told her our gym-a-torium with no fly space and three electricals/drop spaces was going to be difficult. She'll do things "offstage" if she needs to.

Furthermore, she said she may only do the Junior version because it isn't so "dark."

My husband keeps saying to wash my hands of it...but these are my KIDS.

Am I right to be this concerned? I've never done the show myself, but my community theatre did it, and it was wonderful...

Sigh.

Even though the Jr. Version is nothing compared to the original, it would definitely be the safer route. They are very easy to do, and they even come with full accompaniment tracks, sound effects and all. Jr. shows are really great for schools and such, and all the music is made easier for the kids.

How old are these kids, anyways?

I'm pretty sure Robin teaches high school.

Am I correct?
Robinflamingo

Yep, high school.

Well, maybe the Jr. version would be the way to go...

:shudder:

Aren't the Jr. versions of shows adjusted so that the music is more suitable for younger voices? (A.K.A. Children?) And they want to do this with high school?

Yeah, I'd be worried.

They just make it easier. Take it up/down a few keys, reduce harmonies, and BAM. I've seen HS's do Jr. shows and they were GREAT. Less run-time, so it gives them more rehearsal time (usually) so they normally turn out just awesome.

Robin, bless your heart. I can relate a little bit because I went through a few different drama teachers in high school, and that first one was still right there with me in the front row of my very last performance senior year. Even if you're not in charge this time they will ALWAYS be your kids which of course you know, and trust me you'll always be their director/teacher/mom/friend. I guess this doesn't really answer your question, but you are so sweet to be concerned for what happens to everyone even when your own name isn't at stake. That said, you better rest lady! lol. You decided to sit this one out for a reason, and your kids don't want you getting all worried about them too.

That, and they're 18-year-olds performing material intended for 12-year-olds.

I wouldn't worry too much, if it's the jr. verison. I think the kids will have as much fun with it as they would have with Honk and it will test thier abilites much more.

It's not the junior version, I've found out. She's doing the whole thing. With five guys. One of whom cannot sing at all (which means he's going to be the narrator.)

Sigh.

Thanks, Beagle, I know you are right, but I just worry about my seniors.
