ALNM revival

http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/A_LITTLE_NIGHT_MUSIC_Revival_Will_Play_A_Jujamcyn_Theatre_20090611

Mentioned this on the "what would you like to see revived?" thread.

I've seen posts on other forums calling the London cast poorly picked.

I, personally, LIKED that cast. There were a couple of bad choices (Jessie Buckley is too green for Anne, and the guy who played Carl-Magnus did NOT look the part) but Alexander Hanson and Hannah Waddingham were wonderful. Hanson, I know, is interested in the NY production, but I don't know whether he auditioned. It would make sense, though. He certainly looks the part, heh.

I doubt however, that all of them will make it across the pond.

Anyone have casting druthers?
Joshua

They better film it.
And Christine Ebersole should come back as Desiree.
dolbinau

The rumors of the cast have been very hyped.

Some claim Kate Winslet auditioned for Diseree, and also Victoria Clark.

Also, Lansbury apparently was approached for Madame.

Henrick has already been cast as an unkown, apparently.
kozafluitmusique

Can't wait to see what happens!
SmallTownIngenue

Oooh I would love to see Victoria Clark on Broadway again.

Me too! I would try to go see it too if she was on Broadway again. I love her as Margaret.

As wonderful as Kate Winslet is, she is way too young for Desiree at this point. I'd love to see Vic Clark!
dolbinau

Are you aware of Trevor Nunn's production? Everyone is meant to be younger Razz.

Whether or not this is appropriate is another question, but I'm just saying they are going after young Razz.
missannes

Nunn took his ages from the (wonderful) Bergman film that ALNM was based off of, Smiles of a Summer Night.

If done by the right actress (one with a certain sense of maturity, IMO) then I personally see no problem with it.

Winslet would be great.[/quote]
dolbinau

According to more posters at BW, It's an "oscar winning actress with some MT background", doesn't seem like Winslet, unfortunately.
missannes

A unknown has been cast as Henrik... Hunter Herdlicka...it looks like he JUST graduated from Carnegie-Mellon. Class of 2009. I looked up a picture, and he's not quite what I envisioned, but I'll give him a chance. I'm picky about Henrik though, he's a personal favorite. Ehh.

Another BW poster said Nunn didn't want a big name, which seems to contradict that. But i didn't finish reading the thread so I'm not one to talk.

EDIT: Clark is too old. Ugh.
missannes

"According to a poster on ATC, Michael Cerveris has booked "a major role" in this production. Though he's ideally suited for Carl-Magnus, the age restrictions in place would make him only eligible for Frederick. "

From BW.

Also, it sounds like Ramona Mallory is a definite for Anne! Isn't that something, WOW.

Lansbury confirmed for Madame. Smile

A lot of speculation on BW about Diseree.

I'm so, so excited.

(I finished reading that thread and this is the jist, sorry for the double post.)
ilovebway

I am so excited about this. I actually think I'd prefer to see some unknowns in roles like Henrik, Fredkrika, etc.

However, the possibility of one show with both Victoria Clark AND Angela Lansubry? That is way too amazing.

Any news on who's up for Petra? I think I wouls have loved to see someone like Kendra Kassebaum but I know she's unavailable. Maybe another unknown?
missannes

On BW, Benanti was a popular suggestion for Charlotte. But it seemed like an awful lot of speculation.

Leigh Ann Larkin for Petra? I don't know...

Clark is probably too old for Nunn's vision, IMO. Too bad, but it sounded like Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet were being discussed.
ilovebway

I really don't want Benanti in this. I love her, but I just don't see her in any of the roles at this point.
Disney-Bway27

I liked Benanti in Gypsy and that's it. I'm not crazy about her in anything else really. Her "Home" (from Phantom, on the Maury Yeston Songbook) is good, I guess.

But this is exciting! Victoria Clark AND Angela Lansbury! Very Happy
Disney-Bway27

Sorry, sorry, sorry double post but

I'm imagining Victoria Clark singing "Send in the Clowns" and...well it's a beautiful, beautiful thing. I absolutely adore her in Titanic, H2$, and Piazza, so this will be one hell of a production.
dolbinau

Does Clark have a big role in Titanic? I only know the show from a cast recording and (though I haven't tried hard) I can't even hear her.

Also, everyone keep in mind nothign RE: cast is confirmed, in f act some people claim it is an 'oscar-winning actress' not clark now.

Clark had one of the bigger roles as Alice Beane. She can be heard in "I Must Get On That Ship", "First Class Roster", "I Have Danced", and "Dressed in Your Pyjamas" as well as most ensemble songs. She's in more songs than others.
ilovebway

How reliable is the Lansbury as Madame Armfeldt "confirmation"?

Casting!

So word is that it will definitely be Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury in Trevor Nunn's revival of A Little Night Music on Broadway.

OMG I always said that if I couldn't find a discount ticket anywhere to any given show that I would pass on the show (I'm a poor college kid) but that is one team that I would suck it up, pay top dollar, and not see anything else for the rest of the year for.

Where is this word coming from?
Brock07

PS I googled that rumor to see if anything poped up and I found this news article for the revival announcment and started reading the comments. Someone suggested Cheno for Desiree and lots of people responded favorably. A part of me died inside.
dolbinau

Someone claims here that B.Peters won't be in it:

shes awful.
SomeoneLikeYou

Finally Angela Lansbury as Mme Armfeldt! I can't picture anyone else in that role.

Bernadette for Desiree though seems totally wrong...though I could easily see her as Countess Charlotte.
dolbinau

The consensus on BW.com and ATC is Bernadette won't be in it, I'm not sure where it came from.
Brock07

that makes me sad.

Where is the word saying that she either will or won't be in it coming from? I havn't seen or heard any casting announcments period.
SomeoneLikeYou

As long as Lansbury gets to play Mme Armfeldt in this, I'll be happy.

However, I'm probably the only person who thinks Desiree should be played by Barbara Walsh...I think she looks perfect for the role, and I heard great things about her performance as Desiree in regional Little Night Music.

THAT would be so awesome. I don't believe it.

I remember a few years ago someone claiming Lansbury would be in ALNM. It turned out to be a joke Crying or Very sad
SomeoneLikeYou

Angela has expressed interest in playing the character, however.

Angela Lansbury wrote:
It had been asked if I would consider playing Madame Armfeldt in ‘A Little Night Music’ — well, yes, I would. That would be an interesting kind of character, doesn’t have to hold the whole show.

So if the opportunity came up, hopefully she would take it! Wink
dolbinau

People thought Lansbury was definitely going to be in this. Looking at recent posts now people are throwing around Stritch.

LOL. (I think they MUST be joking)

I think we should just wait for the cast list.
Brock07

If rehearsals are still to start in October that should be coming soon shouldn't it? If it were really big names they'd probably announce it as early as possible.
ilovebway

Apparently they were supposed to announce the cast this past week, but had they still had a problem with the casting of one of the principals, so it will take a bit longer.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC Broadway Revival Casting

The New York Post is reporting that we will see Catherine Zeta-Jones as Desiree along with Angela Lansbury as Madame Armfeldt.

Here's the full article.

Zeta-Jones is too young for Desiree...thank God Lansbury is still attached to this, or else I might not be willing to see it.
Please,Hello

Now we know Ceveris can't be in it. He's in the Vibrator play or something.
RainbowJude

Casting...?

Please,Hello wrote:

I believe there are still rumours about Ceveris doing it, but personally I don't want him anywhere near the show. I don't think he's right for anything in it.

What about Hugh Panaro as Fredrik? He's 45, looks like he could have shared a past with Catherine Zeta-Jones being cast at the age she is and has a bit of a Sondheim background, having been in both Company and Sunday in the Park with George. I also wouldn't mind seeing Marc Kudisch as Carl-Magnus.

Casting Rumours

Gossipmonger Michael Riedel asked readers to e-mail him their suggestions for a leading man to play Frederik Egerman. These are what people came up with:

Michael Riedel at The New York Post wrote:
The clear favorite is Raul Esparza, who starred in "Company" on Broadway a couple of years ago. A close second (and a good suggestion) is Paulo Szot, all suave and silky in the revival of "South Pacific" at Lincoln Center. Also popular were Jeremy Irons, Hugh Jackman, Colin Firth and Michael Cerveris.

There were some wacky ones as well:

* Matthew Broderick -- "He will remember his lines!"
* John Goodman -- "He'll bring in all those 'Roseanne' rerun addicts -- and there are millions of us."
* George Hamilton -- "I don't care how old he is, he's the one."
* Henry Winkler (no explanation given, but can you imagine the chemistry between the Fonz and Catherine Zeta-Jones?)

I'm not convinced about Esparza in the role, and I think that perhaps Szot is too dashing and charming.

Jeremy Irons seems about the best of me of the names mentioned above, although I still like my idea of Hugh Panaro, even though he might he a little too much on the good-looking side. Perhaps he could let himself go for the role. Wink

Maybe John Dossett would work too.

SomeoneLikeYou

Raul Ezparza is too young...but Jeremy Irons seems like a good choice...and I actually like the idea of Paulo Szot doing the role, although his voice might be a bit too operatic.

Complete Cast

So the complete cast of principle players has been announced:

Andrew Gans at Playbill wrote:
(Catherine) Zeta-Jones, who will be making her Broadway debut, will play the role of Desirée Armfeldt with Broadway favorite Lansbury as Madame Armfeldt.

Olivier Award nominee Alexander Hanson, who played the role of Fredrik Egerman in the Nunn-directed production of Night Music at London's Menier Chocolate Factory and in the West End, will re-create his work for New York audiences. The cast will also feature Aaron Lazar... as Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, Erin Davie... as Countess Charlotte Malcolm, Leigh Ann Larkin... as Petra, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka as Henrik Egerman and Ramona Mallory [who is the daughter on the original Anne, Victoria Mallory!] as Anne Egerman with Bradley Dean, Marissa McGowan, Betsy Morgan, Karen Murphy, Jayne Paterson and Kevin David Thomas. Additional casting, including the role of Fredrika Armfeldt, will be announced at a later date.

How's this for a bittersweet quote from Lansbury?

Angela Lansbury wrote:
The circle is complete. I'm back singing the beautiful music of Stephen Sondheim, and working with a lovely young actress, Catherine Zeta-Jones!

Now... how do we get someone to film this for DVD?

Cool
