Allergies

General question. I am heading back to voice lessons for my first time, in a few years. I'm very excited. I've noticed this week that my throat has been opening and closing up on me. It almost feels like I have something stuck in my throat and no matter how much I drink or swallow it doesn't go away. I called my doctor. He said its most likely my allergies. I've never had this problem before. He told me that allergies are much worse this season. Is anyone else having problems? Any advice? It's my first lesson in while, I want to make the most of it.

Not yet, but I'm pretty far north. And I just started using some herbal stuff that seems to be helping the dust-mites.

We have a hepa-filter in our bedroom that helps too.

I had a bad problem last year with this -- I had really persistent sinus problems that just wouldn't go away, went to the doctor and got told that I'm allergic to something, but they don't know what, and it's probably dust spores or something small like that. A bit annoying not knowing exactly what it was, but I got it under control eventually.

I really hate feeling "clogged up" -- my sense of pitch goes AWOL, as does my head voice. I find, however, that leaning over a bowl of boiling water with a towel over my head helps to clear out the blocked feeling for a while. Same with taking a hot shower. I guess the inhalation of the steam helps. It's far from permanent, but at least it's something.

Jazzy has some sort of steam-thingee she swears by...
music is my life!!!

when i have a severe reaction, my tongue swells up so i can't breath, hence my voice going dodgy! the good thing is, i havent had a reaction like that in years!

WHAT DOES THIS LUMP FEEL LIKE?

i had a problem when I was in a show last fall, where I was rehearsing for this show and also in another singing group with a very different singing style. I had a constant lump in my throat for about 3 weeks. I went to the doctor and the checked for thyroid problems but found nothing. Might be worth looking into though. It felt like it was on the front of my throat, right above my vocal chords. It hurt to sing sometimes, and I had to stop singing for those few weeks until it went away. It could be some sort of polyp/nodule as well. If it hurts at all- DON"T SING!!! go to the doctor.

Thank you for the concern. I went to my voice lesson yesterday. She noticed right away that I do the "turtle neck", I stick my neck forward slightly when I'm projecting. Very Happy She thinks that because I'm getting ready for an audition I have been rehearsing more, that in combo with my allergues, I may have strained my neck muscles slighty. Confused Now she has me holding 2 finger under my chin so that I start to notice when I strain. It was just so nice to get to a lesson, even though my technique as gone to crap. Smile It gives me no choice but to get better.

I've always had a lot of sinus issues. Lately my voice has completely gone to crap because of it Mad

I also have thyroid issues, which I think is also affecting it, though. (I just started medication for it, and the swelling seems to be going down! So hopefully that'll be easier soon!)
