All-girls high school- show ideas?

Hiya!
Right, we're having trouble deciding on a show to do next autumn in our school. It's all-girls which means that anything male-driven would be tricky and also not that many of the girls are that talented, or even interested.
It needs to be something suitable for high schools, legal and quite cheap in England and not too difficult (Sondhaim, for example, is out.) Also the girls only get two months to rehearse so it can't be something really long.
Last year we did Little Shop of Horrors and The Boyfriend the year before that.
The girls are aged 11-18 mainly.

Also if you have any ideas for the Lower School musical (11-14 years) then that would be good but it's not quite so important.
Thanks!

Little Women?
Nunsense??

I go to all all-girls school and these are the musicals we've done that I can remember from the past few years...

Beauty and the Beast
R&H's Cinderella
Oklahoma!
The Pajama Game
The Sound of Music
Godspell
Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?
Smile!
42nd Street
Once Upon a Mattress
The Music Man
Brigantine

An all-women show that is fun is "Swingtime Canteen"

1940's music. Some characters are supposed to also play instruments, so a plus if you do it that way, but in ours only one did and we had a separate band. You can also have a 'chorus' of dancers, but it's not written in to the show.
music is my life!!!

we did return to the forbidden planet 2 years ago, but the Bosun was a girl, and there were only 2 boys in the ensemble Confused
i loved that though Smile Sweet Charity has lots of Girls' parts, too Cool
Oli-Ol

Lots of good ideas!
Thanks very much Very Happy

"Quilters" !!!! It's an all-female show. 6-7 person cast.

Nominated for 6 Tony Awards, too. Laughing

Beauty and the Beast

And, how did you all do that? Seriously impressive. (depressing as well, we closed B&TB last week!)
SmallTownIngenue

Beehive is another all female show.

Chicago? You could advertise outside the school for some boys to audition for the few male roles. Although it would be quite hard to pull off off if you don't have lots of strong dancers.

I second Nunsense !! Or Nunsense II (I think the rights are out...).

What about Mulan? We did this as our junior production last year and cast some girls in guy roles. It's the kind of show where gender is not that specific.

I know this is old, but say what? Gender roles and identity are a dominant theme of the whole story!
navada

You're right. Let me rephrase. There are certain roles within the show where a gender swap can work. Our military leader was played in a most convincing fashion by a girl.
Nettik

To me, performing Mulan without boys is like performing Ragtime without blacks.

Takes away the entire point of the story.
navada

What would you suggest, then?
Oli-Ol

Chicago won't work as we don't have enough dancers and our main director can't direct normal acting, let alone dancing *sigh*

Mulan is an interesting idea- I'll put it forward.

What's Quilters about?

thanks! Smile

I suggest SMILE. It is about a beauty pageant for highschool girls. Lots of good roles for teenage girls. Also, there isnt any objectionable material if that would be a concern. Also if you do small cast stuff, Little Women has some great female parts but only 6 female roles, tho there are a few things that could make it larger. ANd it has 4 guys I think. A...My Name is Alice (and its sequel My name is still alice i think it is called) is an all female revue musical
Oli-Ol

SMILE sounds best out of the ones you suggested.
I'll do a bit of research about it, but from what you said it doesn't sound as if there should be anything our director won't like about it.

Do you by any chance know who to get the rights from or how much they are?

Exactly. Finally, someone stands up for guy roles that need to be played by guys! Applause
Oli-Ol

haha Smile

shall we see how many we can list?
ActingDude17

List some roles that need to be played by women first. Wink
Oli-Ol

My wife and I teach at an all-girls school. We had done many musical productions their, and when we couldn't find out-side boys which was rare (keep in mind, these girls do have brothers-who want to meet girls), the best musical we did (no boys) was "The Wizard of OZ". I't worked out great because the characters are in costume, and forgetting the "Tin Man" was a girl was much easier to do.
Oli-Ol

Oooh... that is a good idea!

Bringing in boys is not an option for this school, so thank you very much for all your suggestions.
I think we've narrowed it down to:
Quilters,
Smile,
Little Women,
Beehive,
Nunsense.

But if there are any more ideas then we'd love them Smile
Beagle On Stage

You didn't say if it needs to be a musical or not... are plays okay?
Oli-Ol

Oops; sorry!

Our next production is going to be a musical but we're always looking for plays as well, as we do more plays than musicals. However, plays are easier to find because it doesn't matter how many boys there are in the cast.

Do you have any ideas Beagle?

I heard about 3 years ago a local private school did Seussical with all girls. Not sure how it worked but they said that It was good. I imagine that the costumes did wonders!
Beagle On Stage

I was thinking of Steel Magnolias or The Women. Also, I believe Lysistrata only has one man, and there are a few different ways that you could effectively have a girl play him.
Oli-Ol

Are the rights out for Seussical?

I haven't heard of any of those plays Embarassed what are they about?
actually I suppose I could google search.

They have been for quite some time, I think Seussical's actually the most popularly performed musical in highschools right now.

That's interesting. My high school has never done Seussical.

It has been decided.

This year we're doing Trojan Women (a play with songs in it Question ) and I've put all your suggestions forward for next year.

Some shows with mostly female roles:

Stage Door
Leader of the Pack. Has a Phil Spector part - now creepy.
I Remember Mama (straight play or Rodgers/Charnin musical)
For advanced groups: The Golden Apple
Heavylove

If youre girls is good dancers then Cats should be preatty easy to do an all girl version off. Many off the leading caracters are females as it is and the rest shouldnt be that hard to imagine as females (esp if you switch mr mistoffeles to mrs mistoffeles Laughing )
Oli-Ol

Cats would NOT be a good idea! Some girls can dance but the majority can't, and many of those that can do hip hop or street as opposed to jazz/modern type dance
