Aida?

So my teacher made the announcement today that he's thinking about doing Aida next year, in an effort to appeal to the general public b/c it's Disney. I've never seen or heard anything from this show.

Has anyone seen it or been in a production? Thoughts on a high school doing it?
Mistress

1. It's NOT Disney-it's Elton John
2. It's based on an Opera
3....I've momentarily forgotten the plot...it's on Wikipedia if you want to find out.

Disney owns the rights and are the producers I believe. Elton did the music thus the pop feel.

Basic Plot: Aida(Nubian princess captured and made a slave to the Egyptians aka Juliet) falls in love with Radames(The captian of the Egyptian army aka Romeo). Radames is engaged to the soon to be Queen of Egypt, Anmeris. It's pretty much just Romeo and Juliet retold in Egypt with Rosalind being given a bigger part.
Salome

The single worst whow i wasted money to see on Broadway.

its a mess of a show.
music is my life!!!

please don't start...

it's fun if you play a lead but i can imagine it'd be completely pants if you were stuck in the chorus.

as for my first sentence, me and salome have been debating this show for ages (i think it's good)

Rolling Eyes
Salome

problem with teh show is that the characters arent developed, them usic is repetitive and mediocre the lyrics are inane.

"Another Pyramid" is the only good song.
music is my life!!!

i prefer i know the truth...

as for repitition, look at les mis and all those repeated themes

I was just in it at a HS...well actually, I teched...there are SO MANY PROPS IN IT it's so annoying...we had like three shelves, and two tables filled up with props...then you need the big pieces like A map, the closet, the jail, the dock, the boat, a crapload of museum pieces, a tomb, a big ol' bridgy ramp thing, a runway, a banquet table, a bunch of random fences and walls and palmtrees and junk, and there are like 6 different tables needed (wartable, 2 message tables, dressing room table, wash table..etcetcetc).

It sucks if you don't have a strong belter for Amneris. AND AMNERIS SHOULD BE A GOOD ACTRESS TOO OR IT WONT BE FUNNNYYYY....SHE HAS ALOT OF FUNNY LIIINNNEEESSSS

The runway scene is hell for the techies...unless you have a moving set...which I assume you don't

You need to have a strong chorus.

You need a tenor to play Zoser...especially for the last note of "Like Father, Like Son"...it really sucks if they can't hit that note...because it's pretty much hit it, or fail miserably trying.

there are ALOT of costumes and ALOTOTUETHLIEUHILUHFLIUALLLOOOOTTTTTT of quick changes (unless you have a cast of like 75)
...we had 40 people...and there was a quick change every other scene almost...and Amneris has one that is like 1 minute to go from a bath towel to a full far-out outfit.

It's a pretty expensive show to do...our Amneris runway costume alone was about $200...and you need good sets and lighting too, or it's not good.

Like...dont do it if you guys usually do a really low budget show in a small auditorium with one backdrop.
But it was kinda fun, I guess.

Confused

have you ever tried making your own costumes? as a company, ask parents and friends for old clothes as possible costumes - think about it!

Aida - has to have a decent belt but also a good lower range. needs to be a powerful actress

Amneris - has a HUGE stage prescence and a huge voice. possibly a white-soul voice but has to belt REALLY high. great comic timing is essential, but also needs to move the audience later on.

nehebkha - one of the nubian slaves. sings one verse in 2 nubian songs. mezzo soprano

Radames - tenor voice, breaks away from the egyptian guards, a rebel

Zoser - massive voice, kinda evil.... comic timing needed.

and other roles that i cba to talk about...

ensemble - doesnt do much so would completely suck if you wanted a lead role... gets some good songs though, but has to dance well, and sing in complx harmonies

We did make our own costumes...but there are some things that can't be made...like it calls for Amneris to have a really extravigant cape on the runway and something to hide her face.
Gold cape alone= $150...it was really pratty though.

Cool
