Agents for Musical Theater

Now, I've never really thought I would need an agent for musical theater because I've had the help of the Backstage newspaper... but I just had a random thought ... How did the cast members of Spring Awakening (and other new musicals) get the audition for the workshop or at the Atlantic Theater Company ( where it began before going to off-broadway,broadway,etc) I never see that kind of stuff in Backstage....

So I'm guessing most of them had agents who found those auditions for them... What do you guys think? Would it be in my best interest to get an agent for musical theater, and if so... what are reputable musical theater agents. I heard a lot about Abrams Agency... but thats mostly it.

Any other suggestions?

i'm with abrams!!
finding the right agent for you can be difficult...i went through 2 agents before i found the one i'm with now. my agent is like one of my closest friends...i talk to her about everyhting..we go out to lunch, shopping, see shows together, etc etc haha she's so fun, and only like 30 yrs old!
that's not for everyone. some people like a strictly professional relationship. you have to shop around, and i guarentee you that you will get turned down by MANY agents. if musical theater is what you want to pursue, then getting an agent is the best way to find jobs!

yes you need an agent to be taken seriously in musical theatre. By the time the chorus calls and EPAs come around, shows are usually already cast thru agent submissions. In fact, usually an underling w/ no casting authority is sent to sit thru EPAs because the union requires them.
