After listening to the "Spring Awakening" recordin...I must ask this, as I prepare to dodge the rotten tomatoes:
Am I the only one who thinks that, besides a few great numbers, the majority of the score and lyrics are just plain bad and, at times, irritatingly repetitive?

Nope.

ITS ONE OF THE MOST MISGUIDED AND INANE ATTEMPTS AT A MUSICAL SINCE LUTE SONG.

You're not the only one. I don't like Spring awakening

I enjoy it, but only to a point. For the most part it's whiney and angsty.

You're not the only one. Some of the numbers are great, but some others...are just very forgetable and repetative. Especially when they have diologue on some of the tracks (such as in Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind), it sounds very awkward and forced.

Blame it on Miss Pritchard.

I don't know anything about it other than the Tony Broadcast I saw. Two words came to mind.

The dialogue in Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind is actually painful to listen to. If I was possessed by evil spirits and read a scene like that in my drama class, I would be slaughtered. There are so many unnecessary pauses. >.<
I'm glad I got the recording because some of the music is fun to listen to every now and then, but it's definitely not fantastic.

Usually if I give a musical enough of a chance, I can get into it. But with Spring Awakening, I have tried and tried and tried to get into it, and I just can't. It does nothing for me.

There's only a few songs that I enjoy listening to. I saw the musical and I didn't like how it was dialogue with random songs thrown in. The way they pull the microphones out for every song didn't sit the right way with me either. It has a good story and if done right, could have been a great musical.

In my opinion, it's not so much the fault of the actors as it is the writers. I've read the libretto and it's so incredibly weak. Each scene is a few wimpy lines followed by a song. To me it feels like the writers wanted to really push the musical material, and in doing so forgot character development. I'm not sure if any actor could make those lines "work."

I usually try not to pass judgment the first time I listen to a recording, but the thing is I don't even want to listen to this one a second time. Its does nothing for me.

im pretty sure that the show would be ten times better if their were better people in it.
I do enjoy it though.
Then again I enjoy Sondheim, JRB and Cole Porter.
I can't figure out a musical I dislike haha

I agree. Spring Awakening is only as good as it's cast.
Which means when Lea Michele leaves, it'll be an upgrade.

Well, I gotta say that this is a relief. I thought I was the only one *sniff*
I dunno, maybe it's the kind of play that's you only truly appreciate once you've seen it.

It still amazes me that this crap won best musical when a masterpiece like Grey Gardens was up agaisnt it.

To be honest, I think it's a good show with a good cast, It doesn't really surprise me that it won Best Musical, although I havn't seen everything else so I can't truly argue that hardly for this, but it definitely did something different, and I like that. I'm not saying that rock musicals are the future, however I am hopefully anticipating for the future musicals of Broadway to include some old and some new, shows of different genres and with different musical styles, in fact I would love to see a musical with a mix of all different musical styles in it.

Well yeah, I've no problem with Alternate Rock in musical theatre. But the fact is that I just did not care for many of these songs

See, I have the soundtrack to Grey Gardens and have failed to be able to get into it. I haven't seen either Grey Gardens or Spring Awakening, but I like the soundtrack to Spring Awakening much, much more. But I'm not going to pass judgment on either of them as a staged show, I'm just comparing soundtracks.

The Tony Awards judge the entire show, not just the music. That's why it's so shocking that Spring Awakening won to some people...Hell, Grey Gardens crushes Spring Awakening in the music department too...By a long shot!
Kind of off topic, but I used to be indifferent about Grey Gardens as well. If you listen to the recording(s) with no knowledge of who The Edies were or their cultural influence it appears to be an incredibly dry, boring show. After sharing these opinions with a friend, she enoucraged me to pick up the OBCR again and give it a second chance, with extra emphasis on the factor: "Come on! It's about crazy old ladies! What's not to love?" Slowly I learned the basics of it, then the details (including purchasing the documentary that the musical is based on) and now it's one of my favorite musicals. It's extremely fun but has some of the most depth I've ever seen in a musical. So please, give it a second chance.

Wow! I am surprised some of you hate the show that much. I think a lot of the music is gorgeous. The lyrics are awesome as well. I think people have problem with them, because the meaning may not be right there on the surface, sometimes you have to look a lot deeper. So much of the character development is in the lyrics of the song for this show. I understand if people don't like the "style" of music, not everyone likes the whole alt/rockish things. The lyrics though are incredible. They are much more like poetry then typical lyrics. Some of the songs on the cast recording really benefit from seeing the show, I will give you that. I have always felt a cast recording is a benefit/companion piece after or along with seeing the show. Grey Gardens as well is much better being seen on stage then reading it or listening to the recording. I thing Spring Awakening clearly deserved the Tony Award. i think it will change a lot of upcoming theatrical works which is very exciting. I also think some of the topics and lyrics are a bit hard for people to realize get if they haven't experienced much in true love and loss and also if they can't get over the idea that he lyrics are a bit "deeper" then most musicals.[/code]

But the lyrics aren't very deep at all. Spring Awakening just leaves me feeling empty...I do no soul searching while watching/listening to/reading it and walk away with some catchy tunes but not much else. It's nice fluff but is incredibly shallow...I don't need to hear a handful of songs about exploring ones body! What lessons does that teach me? What do I learn about myself after viewing that show and hearing those songs? Nothing.

they lyrics arent deep..are you saying thy are as meaningful as the brilliance of the lyrics in grey gardens, parade,my fair lady, all of sondheim's shows or threepenny opera?
s.a. tries to be deep but winds up just being amatuerish.

I really enjoyed the show, I loved seeing a lot of young performers and their energy (mind you, I DIDNT see Lea Michele, and I was just fine with that). I found the songs to be contagious, but the lyrics nothing to rave about. I really enjoyed Totally F****d on the cast recording and onstage though.
Threepenny Opera is leagues above SA in so many aspects...
