Advice needed!

Ok, so Evita auditions are coming up and I bit the bullet and recorded myself.

I KNOW soprano is not my strong voice... please be kind!!
But I know a lot of you teach voice so any pointers are greatly appreciated.

I like your voice its pretty, tuneful and has great potential.

To improve, you should try working on support which will help with pitching in the occasional spot where you went off a tad.

If, as you say, soprano is not your normal voice then I'm surprised as the top seems nice and actually stronger than the lower notes. I'd say if you have more strength in the lower range show that too at the audition.

Also its fairly airy but that may be because you're in a quiet room and not projecting your voice. Try, if you can, to let as little excess air escape as you sing, that will help.

You could improve it very easily with giving better diction, thats a simple step and a big plus in auditions.

Good luck.

Anything more specific than "support" my voice teacher always said that but never expanded.
MsDivaKate

With support be mindful of taking deep, low breaths and not letitng yourself collapse halfway through a phrase. Rather you should almost feel yourself continue to expand throughout the phrase. The exhale should come on the rests. Also try and make your breaths as silent as possible and you should feel your soft pallet lift as you breathe, so as to create more inside space then outside space. My old voice teacher always told me to invision these breaths as though you were to bite into an apple.

It will do loads for you sound and you'll feel more connected to the breaths.

Also the first step from support is correct posture. One foot slightly in front of the other, feet placed about a shoulders length apart, and you should almost feel like your hips are slightly back. Its hard to describe, its easier to show in person lol. That stance alone will help you become more connected to your breaths and your support center.

Yeah... same here. So I dl'ed it.

You have a gorgeous voice! I would love to hear you sing something that's more in your range because honestly, that was the only problem I heard with this recording. You had to flip into your head tone (which isn't a bad thing) but it's hard to support your headtone.

I know that when you're singing in your chest voice you can kind of push your stomach in to project a little more and that assists in support.

Oh... you wanna hear chest voice?
TOmorrow I will post chest voice!

Bring it on!

My chest voice is mucho different.
Bianca.

how old are you again?

I like it alot.

It is a little young/bright sounding.. try bringing a rounder tone to it..
and one thing.. popping that high note on 'so what hapPENs now' try to make it more 'happOHNs', it seems funny, but is a much more pleasing vowel to the ear in higher notes.

Also, as others have said, support more, it will help you keep from being pitchy at the top (you're really not SO pitchy.. don't worry about that too much.. it's very good, I'm just searching for tiny things that can help you improve)

also, maybe play with the rhythm a bit at the end.. add a few ritards and dotted notes.. change it up a bit.. really put some emotion in and make it pop. Smile

Mine is too. I really need to record some stuff soon, all belty and fun, as most people on here have only heard my Candide stuff.

Then again when I play Woman #2 this summer in SFANW I think everyone is in for a HUGE surprise Wink

Agreed, but don't make it random. Make sure, if you do add pauses and extend the notes out longer than written, that its motivated. Why does ALW have the character sing "So what happens now?" Twice? Why doesn't she just sing it once and stop? There are endless possibilities for this....one could be rhetorical, or straightforward, or curious, or sad, or simple and the other could be something else that builds on the first question. Make choices about what the character is saying and let them motivate your vocal choices.

Yeah, I don't remember the song and am not familiar with it, but I know that when you have a part in the melody where it's all the same note (not sure if that's what they're talking about), change the rhythm, but make it like the rhythm when you're speaking. Almost like you're speak-singing, but still on the notes. Some call it speaking on pitch.

Oh we plan on it. But shh don't tell MTI....I've already gotten in trouble once lol

And as for why she says "so what happens now?" twice, I've always thought of it as a response to the male vocals in the song. When done as a solo though, I always sing th second one with a little more desperation and uncertainty as to her future.
vanillabean

A lot of the stiffness comes from it being an electronic acompaniment.
