Advice for Adelaide dialect?Hey guys.
I've been recently cast as Adelaide, and I'm very excited. I was wondering, though, if anyone who has played the part or knows it well has any advice on how to achieve Adelaide's specific dialect. My voice tends to be on the low side, and I don't want to push the voice so hard that it sounds too fake. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would watch the movie. The woman who is Adelaide (Vivian Blaine) is the one who originated the role. Listen closely to her accent. I wouldn't necessarily copy it, but it's definitely nasal and perky.
Congrats on the part! Have fun.

Good question. A lot of actresses think that Adelaide has screechingly high voice. Not necessarily, it's all about your interpretation. My Adelaide (when I was Nathan) did have the traditional accent but put more New York into it. It worked very well. Just remember the main thing when doing any accent is that you shouldn't let it over power your acting. Don't forget about the line's meaning. Adelaide is a wonderful part and you must be talented to have been selected, so Congratulations!! And keep us posted. I hope I was of help.

Thanks for your help! Luckily I have a few months to work on the voice, so I'm excited to see where it ends up.

quick subject change-to seymour_ii : FOR WHOM... is so much fun...lol just had to say it
umm and you totally nailed it with the accent stuff.
KEEP the meaning of the LINE NOMATTER WHAT
ummmmmm
have fun
don't SCREECH-cause not only will it sound annoying, but it's bad for your voice, and I've seen quite a few renditions of adelaide where that seems to be...umm...what they wanna do i guess...idk
just congrats
have fun
i've played the role twice-once in 6th and once in 9th, and I'd GLADLY play her again
make sure the audience just eats you up
and make sure the comedic timing is DOWN to a tee; it's essential to the role
break a leg, and congrats again =D

Yes I agree.
My friend who got the part of Adelaide is a strong alto and she can do the voice very well. She's also Australian, it's kinda weird but I think it makes the voice more interesting. It's a bit difficult but with practice you'll figure it out. You must be pretty good to get such a roll as Adelaide. Interesting part...
