Adelaide or Sarah?

Which do You Rather?

Personally... I would chose Sarah. But Adelaide would be a blast to play!

What do you think?
mtgirl118

Sarah is a better singing role.
Adelaide is a better comedic role.
I can't decide. I perfer Adelaide.......no, Sarah..............no, Adelaide...........no, Sarah...............no, Adelaide...........I can't decide!

Adelaide.

Adelaide is just looks like so much fun to play. But sarah does have a better role in the show i find
Ep-Griz-Reno

If I were a Bell is my favorite song, but Adelaide gets an accent, the laughs, more songs, the love of the audience, and she's deeper than sarah, she really is. She's waited FOURTEEN years for this guy-just think about that. I was only 14 one of the times I played her-I couldn't even process that...she's got so many internal feelings. Adelaide! Adelaide! Adelaide! Hahaha
NoOneMournsTheWicked

Sarah. There's so much you can do with the character.
broadwaybaby124

Adelaide
Red Head Curls

You have to be a good actor, singer, and dancer to pull off Adelaide. Plus you need comic timing as well as dedication to the accent.

Sarah requires an actor and a soprano.

You decide.
Lady_Thiang

Good point.

I still think I rather Sarah...becuase you can make the character your own.....you kinda of have no choice with Adelaide.

I agree. I think Sarah has a lot more growth than Adelaide.
snowhite880

Adelaide does have more of a story behind her than sarah does...but for Adelaide you have to have amazing comic timing and accent use, plus you also have to be a triple threat

Sarah has more personal growth as a person...and you have to have the acting down well, espically in the Havana scene, you need to know how to do the whole drunk thing, without taking it over the top...and the clear soprano voice.

...but i dont know...i would love to be either of them...i love the new york accent! and i have a certain compassion for both characters
audreydarling

typically I would say Sarah, because I LOVE the ingenues and am a soprano , but I played Adelaide ( I auditioned for both characters partly hoping for Sarah) and it was the most fun i've ever had in a part! You really ddo have to be a triple threat it was so demanding and I had so many costumes (12 specifically for Adelaide ,14 in all) while Sarah has two outfits. They are both great roles..so I couldnt't say which one I would rather be! I would still love to play Sarah sometime!
bwaybrunette21

Adelaide <3 even though I like singing "If I Were a Bell" in the shower haha.
norayouadora

Definitely Adelaide. Love her songs, love the character, love everything about her! Very Happy Lol.
Broadwaybelter

If you have all the range i would choose Adelaide. Allthough Sarah bows last Adelaide would be more fun. You get to dance and she can be just as deep as Sarah is although she has less of a character arc. It seems also that the audience always loves Adelaide the most.
ALoneWanderer

I'm a dude...but I think a drag Adelaide would be much more amusing than a drag Sarah.

Actually maybe thats not true...hmmm which would I rather be.
star2ballie

You would rather be Adelaide and you know it Wink
piscesmoni

Adelaide's Lament rules.
pirate_queen

I'm a little biased at this time since I'm auditioning for Sarah tomorrow...but...

heck, I have to say it: If I could dance, I would totally go for Adelaide. I'm more apt to play those big, boisterous, meaty rolls. But as a non-dancer (well...as an I'll-only-dance-if-you-really-need-me-to-dance dancer) and a Soprano, I'm putting in my lot for Sarah.

As prefrence though: Adelaide all the way!
IdinaMenzelFan

Definitely Adelaide! I actually auditioned for her, but I didn't get the part. Instead, I was cast as the General.
phantomphan85

How old should Adelaide and Sarah be if the show is performed by a cast of a very wide age range (about 19/20-50 years of age). I'm auditioning for Sarah but I'd like to know if its worth going for Adelaide as well.

since when does sarah bow last? Adeladie and Nathan are the leads. sometimes they have all 4 bow last but usually its Nathan and Adalaide.

In our production Nathan and I come out together and then each bow seperately. Then Sky comes out by himself, and then Sarah come out.

You are aware the musical is based on 'The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown', by Damon Runyan, right?

no..it partially based on that story..with other stories, characters and plots thrown in. thrown in. Nathan detroit figures into 6 of Runyon's stories, Sarah..only one. Sky is in 2 of them.

thats f*cked up.

I'm saying that it's MOSTLY based on the story WITH SARAH'S NAME that I listed above...
Salome

still nathan and Adalaide are the leads. Cool
jazzygirlsings

Actually, I think it's dual lead-age...Like a double-date of sorts...

LOL!
sunrae

Sky and Sarah are the romantic leads....and Nathan and Adelaide are the comic leads.

How's about that.
jazzygirlsings

YAY!

Exactly what I was getting at...

But I must admit, I was MUCH less articulate than you! LOL!

I'm gonna blame it on a LONG couple of weeks here! Smile
seymour_ii

The plot of the show is based on "Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and "Blood Pressure". A lot of things are taken from both. Things such as the crap game and the term guys and dolls came from "Blood Pressure". So basically, the reason why Sarah is there is because of the driving force that is the crap game...from "Blood Pressure"
rava_gurl777

ADELAIDE!!
phantomphan85

Sarah, all the way!!

But, then again I'm biased. Very Happy

When G&D Revival opened here in London, it was Ewan McGregor's (Sky)and Jane Krakowski's (Adelaide) names who were on the top of the bill.

The emphasis on who's who in the leads depend on the production company... sad to say it's based on whose names sell tickets more...

Patrick Swayze came along to play Nathan Detroit and suddenly, the spotlight is on that character.

Same rule in Chicago... Tina Arena will be playing Roxy in a few weeks so her name's up there bolder... when David Hasselhoff (yuck) played Bill, he was basically the Chicago poster.
BringMeToBroadway

Adelaide, hands down. Yes, I'm biased, but come on! There will never be a more fun part to play! Stripping onstage? Um, YEAH!
musicandcats

Very Happy I would definitely choose Sarah. She gets great songs, some dancing, romance, and she gets to hit people. I played Sarah earlier this year and I wouldn’t have traded parts for anything.

I got to hit multiple people (one with a bottle in Havana)
I got to do an awesome drunken dance for if I Were a Bell (the audience loved the salsa moves…)
I got to do a beautiful waltzy dance with Sky for I’ve Never Been in Love Before (complete with lifts and spins) swoon.

Guys and Dolls is a great show. No matter how long you fight, there will still be four leads of equal importance.
Angel-of-Music*

Adelaide, just for the accent. =D
AllThatJazz777

They're really both wonderful parts, and I think it just depends on your preference. The audience does tend to love Adelaide more (let's face it - she's just more likeable), but I think if a Sarah were to play the Havana stuff right she could be just as loved. You've just got to do a really great job with the transformation she goes through. Also, I just love all of the variety in Sarah. But Adelaide is so much fun, too, and there's really a lot you can do with her character. I mean, you are limited by the accent and all that, but there are a lot of subtle things you can do that make a big difference. Either way, I adore both parts.

Oh, and on the "who are the leads?" note, I think it's all four. You can also throw Nicely in there, too, if you like. It's really kind of a group of leads.
