Act 1 questionWell, seeing CATS was an amazing experience. But I was puzzled about Deut.
After Griz comes out after the Jellicle Ball is over, Deut left the stage as she started her dance. He re-entered while she was singing.
I found this odd because he has seen what the other cats do to her... yet he leaves as well? I would have thought he would stick around and watch.
Maybe I'm off-base here. But I can't figure out why he left.

Huh?Are you certain Old Deuteronomy left the stage? All the times I have seen the show, he stays up on the Tire and in the shadows as Grizabella dances prior to Act I Memory. Maybe I should ask - is this the Troika Tour or a regional performance?
Of course, there is the possibility that he had to step offstage for a reason and then came back on...

That really sounds like a backstage issue that the actor needed to get backstage for a minute! Just a one-off?

It's the tour I saw last week in Ottawa.
From where I was sitting, Deut turnedc his back on Griz and left the tire and the stage. He then came back on during her last verse of "Memory."

I think this might depend on how the actor and actress playing Deut and Griz define there relationship. In our version they played it as if Deut and Griz were old lovers, but had a bad break-up (so to speak) and were not on very good terms in the first act, and not until Deut saw his (I'm assuming..) daughter Jemima give Griz a chance did he change his ways. I'm not saying this is how I think it should be, but thats just how they did it in our production.

Were you seated in a spot where a portion of the stage wasn't visible? I've seen Deuts that initially will turn their backs and start walking offstage, but then think twice about it after Griz starts dancing and will sit pretty far stage right. After Griz finishes and starts to walk offstage, Deut will then grab your attention by walking all the way back across the tire while reaching his hand out towards her.
Point being, if you were seated so far off to the side so as not to see the oven or the pipe, maybe you just didn't see Deut sitting there and it only appeared that he had left?
Just an assumption, though. I'm willing to bet that, like others have said, he just had to step offstage for a minute.
