About to be in a productionI'm about to be in a production of Ragtime in my school. I'm not sure what part I am good for though- I have a relatively high voice, but I can go lower, and I'm a white girl. =D The whole performing arts class that's doing this is white though, except one girl, so race isn't much of an issue. Can someone tell me what the different female parts are? (i.e. What other ones are there besides Evelyn, Emma, Sarah, and Mother?) Thank you!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those are really the only female leads. There's also Sarah's Friend (black), Kathleen and Brigit (Irish maids with a few lines), and then women in the chorus (with a few that have one or two lines). I'm currently playing Mother at my high school, and I'm a soprano, but Mother also has a few songs in the lower range. Evelyn is more mezzo soprano and Emma an alto. Sarah is not applicable to you, but she is a mezzo soprano too.
I think that race is an issue in this show though, because this whole show is based on racial tension. I'm not sure that you can do this show with color-blind casting and have it have the same feelings and message that it is supposed too. I'm also doing this show right now at my high school, and before auditions our director sat us all down and explained why she was casting this show according to race and not just talent. It just wouldn't be the same. Best of luck on your production!

Thanks...I suspected as much about the female roles. I think we can pull off the race implication thing, though; I think its a matter of acting. We're also going to explain to the audience before the show who's playing a black character and such.
It's cool that you're Mother- "Back To Before" is one of my favorite songs.

Okay, we're in the middle as casting as a class, and I'm probably going to either be Sarah or...Booker T. Washington. O.o (we don't have as many guys as girls in the class) What does he sing?

Booker's got parts in the opening and a few other spots, but his main song/scene is Look At What You've Done in Act 2

Booker T. probably has the least stage time of any character. He is in the prolouge (along with everyone else in the show), he is the voice as Coalhouse's car is trashed, and he's on at the end with "Look What You've Done", which isn't all that long either. I put him on level with Houdini/Ford/JP Morgan.

Thank you....does anyone know a site where I can listen to Look What You've Done? (Sorry, I'm all questions here =D)

There's a 30 second clip on Amazon, but you'll probably need to get a CD to hear the rest

I played Kathleen in my school's production last year. It was really fun. I also doubled up as an immigrant and New Rochelle woman. Even if you're in the chorus it's such a fun show. And then there's the girls that dance around we Evelyn Nesbit in Crime of the Century. that'd be a fun part
