Daphne Rubin Vega was pregnant at the time and was unable to play the role.
And Fredi Walker said that she was too old to play Joanne for the movie.

Yeah, it's not like Fredi and Daphne were snubbed at all. Like Benjivaudeville said, Daphne was pregnant, and Fredi herself believed she was too old to pull off the role. So there were no hard feelings.

I believe I read somewhere that Fredi Walker was a good ten years older than the other cast members. This is kinda OT, but the ages of the cast members in the movie didn't bother me at all and didn't seem to bother any of my friends who saw the movie with me. I was much more concerned about awkward cuts and transitions.

It didn't necessarily bother me. But they were.

none of the ages bothered me much. it's always better if you're gonna make a movie, to get the original cast. i still woulda given anything to have daphne not been pregnant and in it and fredi, too. i dont think she's too ugly, either. so, she's not slim like tracie - big deal.
i, for one, think a heavy-set joanne is better for the character. it plays more on her paranoia that maureen will leave her for another woman - or man.
