music is my life!!!

A Wickedly Questioning Question

Hi! Back again!

i've recently been obsessed with Wicked and i'm listening to the soundtrack over and over and over...

anyway, some people at my local theatre group (in fact nearly all of the kids from 14-18, which is alot of people) are completely obsessed too and that's all they audition for concerts.
i'm thinking of doing the version of defying gravity or no good deed.
Another thought i had was that the leaders have got the shows planned until the year before i leave.
i really would love to play Elphaba but i know some people who have a better chance than me but if i audition a song, then i might not get it because everyone auditions stuff from Wicked.
Should i suggest that we do the show or should i audition one (or both) of the two songs i mentioned?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

If everyone else is auditioning with songs from Wicked, do something different - you'll stand out! As for suggesting it as a show to do, I have to say that I very much doubt that performing rights are not readily available and won't be for quite some time, so you can suggest 'til you're blue in the face but probably won't get anywhere even if your leaders like the idea.

thanks!

i leave the group in 4-5 years, do you think we'll be allowed to do it then?

i'm thinking about auditioning It Takes Two from ItW and My Strongest Suit from Aida - any other suggestions?

Btw i think i'm a mezzo but i've got a sore throat at the mo so not sure...

i agree with kiwitechgirl. unless you're an outstanding singer and can bring something new and better to the songs, Wicked is too overdone to make good audition songs.
and i dont know much about performance rights, but Wicked is still pretty new and i doubt they would give them out that soon.

I can't imagine them bringing the rights out soon (as upsetting as it is!). It took Rent... 9-ish years after opening on Broadway for rights to come out in Australia - you can't even do it legally in the US yet. It took Cats a long time after first opening as well for amateur rights to come out. I'm not sure how long, but it was a fair while. I just can't see rights for Wicked coming out for a long time.
music is my life!!!

is it because it's so popular (Please! it's all about pop-u-lar! Sorry! couldn't help it!)?

also, i sound a bit too much like Idina when i do Defying gravity at the mo, and usually those top f's sound horrible when i do it...

it'd be boring for everyone who has the OBC...

...but it's my dream to play Elphie or Nessa or Morrible!

This is a little late, but I'm jumping on the do two songs not from Wicked bandwagon. I directed three summer concerts this past summer and at least half the cast auditioned a Rent or Wicked song. Now, I like Rent and Wicked but by the end of auditions I never wanted to hear either show again. In the end, while the performers made it in I think the only song from either show that made it into the concerts was Seasons of Love and it was put in as a last minute replacement.

Also, Wicked rights are definitely not available yet. They most likely won't be available until the Broadway production closes or is on it's last legs.

true! i actually found a song earlier (sun and moon from songs for a new world) which still has a similar kind of flavour to it. how about that and my strongest suit from Aida?
DramaRobin2002

Oh, Stars and the Moon is a great song. One of my favorites for concerts and cabaret shows. I'm not really familiar with Aida. I'd say for more choice, you might want to look into more from Songs For A New World or maybe even some older shows.

cool!

i found sun and moon from the mezzo/belter version of Theatre songs for singers, and i looked thru the book earlier and most of them are way too low for me to sing...

anyway, Aida is an Elton John/Tim Rice musical based on the Opera, Aida. it's bascally the Egyptians have invaded Nubia and taken the Nubians as slaves - including the princess. the materialistic Egyptian Princess and the genuine Nubian Princess befriend eachother and altho the Egyptian Princess' engaged to a prince, he gets interested in the Nubian Princess.

I can't really explain it very well but my strongest suit is when the Egyptian princess tells the audience about how much she cares for her appearance and nothing else. Mr. Green

i'll look in the library for vocal selection or vocal score cuz i really like Sun and moon!

I actually know of 2 highschools in California that performed Wicked last year. And they made their own shirts (with the wicked logo and their school name) for their production and everything. crazy
music is my life!!!

seriously? did they have the rights?
Matthew

How long will it take you...
There are no rights!

That's cool. I knew what Aida is about, I am just not completely familiar with all of the music. Anyway, the song from Songs For A New World is called, "Stars and the Moon". "Sun and Moon" is believe is a song from Miss Saigon.
