A Rather Unusual Audition QuestionI'm a senior this year, and am very excited that Into the Woods is our musical. Here's my dilemma. I'd like to be considered for both Cinderella and Little Red. I have 32 bars and a one minute comedic monologue to prove myself. I figure I should use each to show off either character. So a Cinderella-ish song and a Red-ish monologue or vice versa.
The musical director thinks I can only sing soprano, and the director doesn't really know much what I can sing. But how do you think I should arrange it, do you think the acting side of things is vastly more important in either of them? Any song or monologue suggestions? If I went with a Red monologue, I was thinking something from Trixie the Teen Detective, but I may be totally off.
Thanks in advance.

When I auditioned for Into the Woods, there was a girl who did the readings and was brilliant for Little Red. But then she got up and sang the Witch's Lament and threw everyone for a loop. I would just be careful about using different readings and songs for audition for multiple characters - you wouldn't want your Red monologue and Cinderella singing to cancel each other out.

You probably don't need to worry about it too much since you've known these people for years. It's not like you have to sell yourself to people who are seeing you for the first time.
Because of the situation with the music director, I would probably sing a song more appropriate for Little Red. Since she knows you can sing soprano already, you don't have to sell her that you could do Cinderella; what you do need to sell her on is that you can do other things too.

As I can't do a song from the show, I'm not too worried about them cancelling out, but I'll keep that in mind.
In terms of a Little Red song however, I can't seem to think of a show with a similar character and voice type. Mary from The Secret Garden is the only bratty little girl I can think of, but nothing from that would be very appropriate. Anyone able to point me in the proper direction?

I think if the director thinks you can "only sing soprano", then go with a Little Red song. The classic Little Red audition song is My New Philosophy from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. I just thought of something... Baby June's version (the innocent one without innuendo = ] ) of Let Me Entertain You from Gypsy might work as well.

The girl who played Little Red in the college production I was in sang "My New Philosophy" from YAGMCB and the director loved it. You should get a copy of it and sing through it!

I think that could work really well, because even though it's not a Sondheim song, he still wrote the lyrics and is associated with it. Plus, you can be as loud and bratty as you want!
Another song choice is I Want it Now from the orginial Charlie and Chocolate Factory movie.
