Hi Everyone
I'm from Holland and I have a question about Beauty and the BEast.
The show is running here right now and I've heard that there was a story about our show in one of the magazines in your land. Does anyone read it? Or does anyone know in witch magazine it was? Because our cast loves to read it because in the magazine there was said that our musical much better was than the broadway musical..

Yes it was an American article. A friend of my has been there and some friends of her there said it. But they had forgotten witch magazine it was. Wink

Ok, so I haven't seen the article, or the show....live. BUT! I have seen and heard clips from it, yes. Being as I won't get anywhere near enough money to get over there to see it, clips are the best I can do, and I've heard enough about it to make a small judgement. I still stand by what I said. Nothing in the world can touch the original Broadway production with a ten foot pole.

....but that's still just my opinion. =)

If there is such a magazine article, which I highly doubt, it's nothing more than propaganda, you are talking about a Joop van den Ende production.

Actually, I wasn't going to publish this section before I was done, I'm waiting for a few vids and pics of the Dutch production. But when there are people saying that the show in Holland is best, makes me go Twisted Evil

First of all, I read your site and I do really respect your opinion, but I found some mistakes while reading.

1. You can see the Beast change to a more human kind of reacting and behaving. The clothes changes also. Maybe not as much as in the Broadway production, but they do change.

2. The way people sing is the same as if some likes a colour. It's a opinion which can be different for anybody.

3. I've got both the soundtracks from Broadway and the Dutch production and I think that it's a matter of taste which ones you like most. Besides that, it could be possible the songs are brought misplaced cause of the translation.

4. Chantal Janzen (Belle) is not only a comic actress. She's an all-round. (Take the movie the Preacher for example) But I must say, she can be really funny in real life.

5. Chantal Janzen is shorter than Stanley Burleson (the Beast). I've seen both of them and Chantal is far smaller than me and Stanley at least half a head taller.

6. The details are maybe not as precise as the Broadway production, but only the first two, maybe three rows are able to see those details, so why would they be there if most of the audience can't see it.

7. Books are important in Belle's life. So I think it's not strange she always has one with her. Even when she's going to find her dad.

8. As far as I know, it wasn't the actress who decided she wanted a blonde wig. And she isn't a natural blonde... Her first understudy also played half a season with a blonde wig and her alternate played with a brown wig. And blonde doesn't means immediately that you're silly or you're intelligence is lower.

9. When Joop van de Ende got the rights for Beauty and the Beast, he had also the permission to make a free translation, so in some ways it really is a little bit different, but that doesn't make it a bad translation.

10. Beauty and the Beast is a travelling production in Holland, so not every character has the possibility to have 2 or 3 costumes. They already need 15 trucks to move from theatre to theatre.

11. Carlo Boszhard (Lumière) didn't burn his wrists in a manner of speaking like he had burning wounds. Only some hairs burned away. Besides that, it happened during the try out's and there were already new hands made (soft and safer ones).

12. Lumière is the entertainer from all the characters from the castle. And I think he don't overreacts. It's just part of the story.

13. The pictures from Mrs Potts are from the early stage of the production (the light green one) and after the promotion they did at the National Musical Awards Gala, they made it darker, because it was to light. So these doesn't match with the production at the moment. *and the be really honest, I think the Broadway Mrs. Potts looks like a ping-pong ball... but that's what I think.*

14. The Silly Girls don't look like teenage girls. They are younger than Gaston, that's for sure. But 10, no way. And the way they talk just indicate how silly they are.

15. With a free translation and the possibility to make a new version from the play, gives you also new insights and the possibility to add and changes things. Maybe the tissue box is a little bit big, but he's cute. And does it really matters where the B by the napkins stands for...

16. Lefou's teeth in the Maison des Lunes. You should just be their in the theatre and see it. The whole audience is laughing and about the children, the most of them come to the day shows and the are only one or two days show a week. As far as I know, when I was there at a day show, the children laughed as hard a the adults. And just watch the telly, there far more action and abuse than in the whole play they see once.

17. I don't say I like the translation, there are some things I like to see different, but what does it matter if Madame de la Grande Bouche performed in the Royal Opera or the Scala of Milan.

18. The heart in the Dutch translation from 'A change in me' is not literally used to point to your heart, that's beating in your body, but to the heart you feel with. Besides that, Belle's is dreaming about the tales she's reading, about daring swords fights and princes, so she may not be searching for a man desperately, but she wants to meet her prince on the white horse one day. The Dutch translation is also about how Belle has changed and maybe she realized that she already found the man she want to marry with. *and the those same lines are translated twice because they have to tell the story, which they maybe need some more words to tell*

19. The four words in Dutch *ik hou van jou* in the end duet have the same count of syllables as the English version, because they make *'k hou van jou* from it, and what doesn't matter, they don't sing anything about 3 or 4 words in the songs.

20. The rose is a symbol from love and it's a very important thing in Beauty and the Beast, so what the heck doesn't it matter that the whole Dutch castle is decorated with roses. Beside that, the castle looks empty and cold, just in the way Belle see it.

21. There's real fire on the stage. But not much. Not all the theatres the play went to have the same size and there are the rules from the fire-fighters every building which has to be followed.

22. I haven't ever heard the leaves from the rose didn't fall of. We have a gigantic network of people who go to the show and we've never heard a thing about the rose.

23. They spell Belle like Bel in the booklet from the cd, because they say Bel and everyone knows it's just Belle.

24. The award for Best Understudy, which wasn't going to Céline Purcell, which you're suggesting at your site *who is going to play of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady* but Brigitte Heitzer. Céline was the Alternate from Belle *plays only that part and has nothing else to do with the show* and Brigitte is Belle's first understudy *she's also in the ensemble when Chantal is playing Belle or she's playing Babette *also first understudy**

I know it's a lot and I know everyone has an own opinion about this, but remember, Joop van de Ende had the rights to change it. Some people like it and some don't. I think that's it's just the way of life.

I completely agree with you and I think that in most cases your arguments are just based on personal opinions and tastes. So I don't see why we should hate this wonderful show.

By the way, there's one thing I don't agree on.. I believe that Céline did win the award for best understudy! Brigitte was on second place.

The Dutch version has won 3 awards... The musical of the year award, the sentimento understudy award (Brigitte) and an award from musicalfan.nl (or musicalfan.net I'm not sure) and that one was one by Céline Wink
