A question on "Poor Thing"Okay, so I'm watching the Hearn Lansbury DVD, and couldn't help but wonder...is "Lucy" during the silent reenactment actually the actress playing the Beggar Woman, in a different costume? Or is it an ensemble member?
Thanks.

It's a different actress. (I assume an ensemble member but I don't take notice ).

Thanks, but I've been watching it again and noticed that "Lucy's" face does slightly resemble the Beggar Woman's...and technically there'd be plenty of time for her to change looks between that scene and the Beggar Woman's first scene.
At least we know it is the same actress in the movie...lol

I figured they'd just keep her in the Beggar Woman costume and have an ensemble member do it. It's not like her part as Lucy is very long or very prominent.

When I was the production manager for Sweeney Todd, the dancer in Poor Thing was played by the actress playing Johanna.

on the dvd its Sarah Woods who plays Beggar Woman.
when I did the show the first time in the early 90s i was young lucy..our beggar woman was slightly plump so she couldnt do it.
when i played Beggar Woman in a few seasons ago i also played Young lucy.

Oh, so I guess it all depends on the production...
It's minute though. Regardless, we all know that the Beggar Woman is the true Lucy. lol
BTW, something interesting I noticed on the Hearn Lansbury DVD...at the moment when Sweeney kills the Beggar Woman, the music playing in the background is the part of "Epiphany" when he sings, "and my Lucy lies in ashes!"
Oh, my darling Sondheim. Nothing is a coincidence with you!

...is that the, "lies in her chaise" line, or have I been singing it wrong for the past couple of years?

It might be, but "lies in ashes" is just how it always sounded to me...

I always thought as soemoen already mentioned that it was Betsy Joscelin doing young Lucy (I think the same thing was done in the revival), for foreshadowing/artisc reasons.

In our production, the actress playing Johanna plays young Lucy, and then the movement she does in the beginning of Poor Thing is exactly replicated by the Beggar woman at the end when she visits Sweeney's shop.

It says Johanna portrays young Lucy in the script, but it's obviously subject to change.
