A monologue for me? Help please!

I'm auditioning for Baldwin-Wallace's summer MT intensive college audition prep program. I need to make a DVD of me singing 32 bars of two contrasting MT selections (one uptempo, one ballad), and doing an age-appropriate monologue.

I'm sure I'll be able to pick out two songs (but if anyone has suggestions I wouldn't mind hearing them Smile ) but what I REALLY need help on is the monologue!

I haven't got very much time (I just found out about it and the deadline is April 15 Shocked ) so if anyone would be so kind as to actually PM me the TEXT of a monologue, that would be ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS and I would love you forever Smile

It needs to be age appropriate for a 16-year-old girl, and I believe it actually needs to be from a play/musical rather than a monologue book or something. I would rather do something contemporary than classical, and I prefer something a little more on the comic side Smile It says that it shouldn't be more than a minute long, but that's not really an issue... I'll just cut it down if it's more than a minute.

I would really, really appreciate your help!

Love always,
Leah

Okay, I've found a few... but they're mostly from musicals. The website for the program says "from classical or contemporary drama"... so is a musical monologue okay or not?

It also says the monologue should be age-appropriate... so are monologues from "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" okay? I mean, the characters are supposed to be young, but teenagers play them all the time...

These are the monologues I've found, and the issues I have with them.

1. “Coat Hanger Sculpture” from You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown
Pros: I've done it before, and it's funny and easy.
Cons: It's a young character, and it's a commonly done monologue.

2. “Head Queen” from You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown
Pros and cons are the same as above.

3. “Explain Love To Me” from You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown
Pros: It's a lot less common than the above two, but still funny and easy.
Cons: It's still a young character, and it's kind of short.

4. “Don’t Let Me Be Normal” from The Fantasticks
Pros: I've done it before, it's fun, and very age-appropriate.
Cons: SO OVERDONE. If I do it well, will that matter?

5. “The Conrad Birdie Fan Club” from Bye Bye, Birdie
Pros: I've done it before, it's cute and funny, and really age-appropriate.
Cons: It's a bit overdone...

6. “Gypsy Rose Lee” from Gypsy (Louise's speech)
Pros: It's pretty dramatic, but not weepy... I like it.
Cons: It's kind of short. I don't know how age-appropriate it is... how old is Louise supposed to be here? I'll do more research on it, I guess.

7. "The Greatest Star" from Funny Girl
Pros: I've done it before, and it's cute and funny.
Cons: It's not TOTALLY age-appropriate, and kind of common... also, it rhymes, because it's a spoken sort of song in the show.

8. “There’s No Place Like Home” from The Wizard of Oz
Pros: I've heard it a million times, and it's easy, and age-appropriate.
Cons: Everyone knows it and will compare it to the movie version.

9. “Curtain Call” from Phantom Rep
Pros: It's NOT overdone, it's dramatic and funny at the same time, and I like it!
Cons: It's LONG (though I can cut it some) and I think the character is in her early 20's... I can't find the information online! It would work for someone my age, though.

10. "I Love to Act" from Anton in Show Business
Pros: Not so overdone, shortish, nice.
Cons: The character is 24, but the monologue isn't too old.

Okay, sent Smile

Now, would you like to help me out here?

I don't know how it is for college program summer camps, but for college auditions it's typically a no-no to do a monologue from a musical. I'd assume the same for programs that they have.

I am not at my laptop right now but I can PM you a few monologues tonight or tomorrow, probably.

What are you singing?

AHH THANK YOU! I would appreciate it so much if you could PM me some Smile

And thanks for the advice on musicals!

I'm not completely sure what to sing... 32 bars of one uptempo and one ballad...

I was thinking perhaps a cut of Not For The Life Of Me from TMM for the uptempo, I do a 32 bar cut for auditions all the time, or from My New Philosophy from YAGMCB. I do both of them a lot.

For the ballad, I could do a cut of Christmas Lullaby from Songs For A New World, Once Upon a Dream from J&H, or Your Daddy's Son from Ragtime.

Any suggestions on which ones to do? Or not? Smile
They all sound fine in my voice.

That's the good thing about auditioning for musicals all the time... you learn what sounds good in your voice and what doesn't!

Unfortunately I rarely ever have to do monologues Sad

I wouldn't use any of the monologues that come from musicaltheatreaudition.com. They're for the most part overdone.
