A Little Night MusicHi, I've just been phoned by a Second Cousin who I've never met, and asked to be rehearsal pianist for a local production of a Little Night Music.I've got no idea when I'm getting the score, he said he'll call tomorrow, because he's got a test at uni tonight. So, anyone got a (Digital) copy I could look at or any hints/tips? |

Sondheim, is by nature, very complex. Here are a few Youtubes to look at while you are waiting...

Cheers for that. | ||

My advice to you is begin waltzing instead of walking, and DON'T play the clarinet.

OK, thanks for the tip
Is it all (or mostly) in 3/4? |
||

Almost entirely. Or variations thereof. There's 6/8, and I think some 12/8. But there are passages in four in I think Every Day A Little Death and In Praise of Women, maybe The Miller's Son. I'm not positive, though.

Well, I've got the score, and a recording.
I've just been reading it through with the CD, but they've cut out all the vamps and dialogue that's under music, as well as the Entr'acte. Wish me luck! |

Well, rehearsal's going great, the show opens on 29/08 and closes on 12/09 and I've got an Orchestra Rehearsal tomorrow, followed by a rehearsal with the cast. I'm playing a mix of the 3 F Horn parts on an Eb Horn; Trumpet 2 on trumpet; and trombone on a Baritone. Lots of book swapping, and I'm taking 2 extra music stands, just in case I need them. I've got a guitar stand (without the bit that holds the guitar up; ie the frame, and neck brace) which the bari fits in nicely, so I'll use that for when I'm not playing Bari (Which is most of the time!), my trumpet stand for my trumpet, and I'll work something out for the Eb Horn, but I'll be playing that the most, so It won't be down often!

Where are you? Stateside? Aus?
My 2nd Cousin's the MD, and I'd never really met him before he phoned and asked if I wanted to do Rehearsal Piano. This is his 2nd show as MD (He did "I Love You, You're Perfect, now Change" last year), he usually plays Bass or percussion; and he seems to be enjoying the show, as am I! I'm looking forward to the rehearsal tomorrow, should be fun, with 12 people covering 22 books! |

Actually, the second to last bar is in 2/4 followed by the last chord on Beat one of the last bar, which is 3/4, instead of just doing it in 3/4 and having the last chord on beat 3.

Ah. You're right. | ||

Less than 3 weeks until opening night, and everything's getting together. Sitzprobe the week before the show opens, and then full Cast + Orch runs from then until opening night.

So, I know this isn't really related to what is being discussed in this thread but since it's about A Little Night Music I thought I'd just go ahead and ask.
In the finale version of Send in the Clowns Fredrik sings "me as King Lear." I don't really get why what happened to him in the musical has to do with what happens to King Lear. My friend said it's because his "children" leave him at the end but that still leaves me wondering. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance! |

Good question. I really have no idea though. Sorry

It has been suggested that the Lear line references the fact that Frederik's 'kingdom' has been split up - his household has fragmented and all gone their separate ways.

Interesting, thanks for the thought. Can't wait for Sondheim's book on his lyrics comes out.

Oh God, our First violinist has hurt her neck and cannot play, and the percussionist dropped out. The show opens on Saturday. Tomorrow night is the final rehearsal. It's down to me to find replacements. Oh Dear....
But, apart from that, everything's going great, and we're set for a great run of a great show. It's been a ball! |

King Lear was a proud man who saw only what was in front of him.. Lear later relaized that his life was an illlusion. |
