A Little Night Music remake

Anyone else agree that this movie needs a remake?

If so, who should be in the cast and who should direct?

Here is my ideal cast:

Desiree Armfeldt- Jessica Lange
Fredrik Egerman- Alan Rickman
Carl Magnus Malcolm- Kevin Kline
Charlotte Malcolm- Christine Baranski
Madame Armfeldt- Angela Lansbury
Henrik Egerman- Eric Millegan
Anne Egerman- ??
Petra- ??
Fredrika- Dakota Fanning

I don't think NPH for Henrik...for some reason, I just can't see it. I think it's the blond hair. I would say Eric Millegan, late of FOX's Bones series...recently discovered his astounding vocal capabilities. He's the correct type, too.

Also, Alan Rickman doesn't strike me as right for Frederik. I would love to see George Hearn do it but he's too old and he belongs on the stage, anyway. Just, not Alan Rickman, haha.

They really need to remake this, though. You're completely right. Give it another shot. And I would gladly direct, a la Bergman's version of The Magic Flute. Only way to make it work.

(Can Dakota Fanning sing?)

Have you seen Alan Rickman play a vulnerable, romantic lead? Watch "An Awfully Big Adventure" or "Truly, Madly, Deeply" (in the latter, he plays a disillusioned middle-aged actor who seduces a 16-year-old girl, and then realizes that it was her mother that he was in love with the whole time... a very similar role to Fredrik, actually).

Alan would make an INCREDIBLE Fredrik. He can sing, too.

And Dakota Fanning can carry a tune, which is about all that is required for that role, unless they decide to keep in her whole song.

Just Googled Eric Millegan and I see what you mean about his singing and type being right for Henrik. *runs back to edit him in*

Would you consider him vulnerable and romantic in "Sense and Sensibility"? I might, and I think he's perfect acting-wise, but I'm concerned with the aesthetic aspect. Rickman is good-looking, but not the same kind of good-looking I associate with Frederik. Err...I'm trying to think of how to explain. Rickman is dark and brooding. I always saw Frederik as simply charming. I thought Alexander Hanson, in the Meiner London revival, was perfectly cast, for looks and ability.

Rickman is not always dark and brooding. In "An Awfully Big Adventure", he gave an extremely sensitive, lovely performance as a disillusioned middle-aged actor who falls in love with a 16-year-old girl. He was sweet, charming and sexy, not dark in the least.

And Rickman has enough emotional depth and power as an actor to create a thoroughly moving Fredrik.

I'd definitely have to see it to believe it.

I also would love to see Michael Cerveris as Carl-Magnus. Not a huge movie star but...it would make me a very happy person.

This movie is completely possible. I wish they hadn't screwed it up so much the first time.

Go rent "Truly Madly Deeply" and "An Awfully Big Adventure". Trust me, after watching those films you will have an altogether different perspective of Rickman. I am positive that he would make a charming and delightful Fredrik.

Perhaps I will, then. Maybe I'll be convinced.
Salome

Jeremy Irons as Frederick
missannes

YES! That's perfect.

I think christine baranski is too american for a film version. kristen scott thomas would be perfect as charlotte.

I love him too, but I think Alan Rickman would be even better.

I wonder who for Petra and Anne. I can't seem to think of any Hollywood sopranos offhand who would have the timing for Anne.
Salome

Shirley Henderson as petra.
LeocadiaBegbick

Does she sing?

I've seen and heard so many horrible Annes, it's lunacy. The only one I like to this day is Victoria Mallory. (Who, by the way, I just found out is married to Mark Lambert! Talk about a coincidence.)

My thought for this was actually Zooey Deschanel. My only thought. Well, anyway, she's got a sweet little voice and I thought she was adorable in the recent-ish TV version of Once Upon A Mattress. Whether her acting is good enough, I can't say, or even her singing...just a thought.

Petra is TOUGH. Shirley Henderson? I can't see her as anyone but one of the friends in the Bridget Jones movies...I definitely wouldn't think of her as a Petra. Too mousy, maybe?
Salome

I forgot she wasi n Bridget Jones. she sings brillaintly didnt any of you see Topsy Turvy?
