A Little GuidanceHi!Okay, so this summer I'm going to French Woods Festival. It's a camp in NY and they do a bunch of shows a session and at the beginning of camp there's one big audition for shows. I want to nail an audition and do something amazing so I need to find the song. I'm a 16 year old girl. With a good range and a nice belt when I'm not nervous. I usually say I'm a mezzo but I don't have trouble with high songs or low ones. So basically I'm full of options. So I have some ideas and I was just wondering what people thought. Also the audition is 16 bars so I want advice on what portion of whatever song I sing. A Home For You -Batboy Privilege To Pee -Urinetown My New Philosophy -YAGMCB Ease On Down The Road -The Wiz i had others but i can't think of them. If you have any other suggestions I'm open. thanks. |

isn't my new philosophy a duet?
you also might feel awkward singing about pee at an audition, but idk... |

Schroeder sings it with Sally, but it's not very much from him so I'm sure she could just gloss over that part of the music. |

I like your picks ... the description of your voice was pretty much exactly like mine ... so, I know where you're coming from, vocally! I would do something catchy that shows off your range and your belt. Maybe "The Wizard and I" from Wicked ... I know it's really overdone at auditions, but it's a good "showstopper" song. You could also do "On My Own" from Les Mis or any Hairspray song ... Break a leg, hun! |

as far as privilege to pee:
i think i can pull it off singing about pee because i don't have that kind of embarrassed nature i love the way i seem in it. [i've been cast as a lot of girly roles and so penny is such a different character.] the only problem with that song is i don't know what part to sing. |

also: another possible choice I had was
Come To Your Senses -tick, tick ...BOOM! |

Have you ever checked out a 16 Bar selection book?
http://www.pianoatpepper.com/Piano_Catalog_Popular_Broadway_Mixed_Collections.list There's one at the top of that page. As for which part to sing, which part of the song do you enjoy the most? Try and get a piece with a decent range, with something in it that you do particularly well. Whether it's a tricky interval or a high note or somethign else doesn't matter, but it should be your best moment. Try and steer away from multiple long held notes, you only have 16 bars. If you want a long note try and make it at the end of the selection, but I mean you don't want to waste spend half of your singing time holding notes unless they do something interesting. And I'm rambling, but my advice is to pick the part that you like singing the best because then you'llreally shine when you sing it. |
