A 'Get noticed' Song

What are all of your favorite 'stand out' high energy, showstopping songs, that can REALLY be performed to the highest degree, and are sure to get you noticed and remembered? I'm looking for a genderless or female song, and to be honest with you, range isn't a giant issue. Just something highly performable, and high energy, for a theatre competition, so that I can really go all out. It's got to be a showtune, and preferably not of majorly provocative subject matter.. but really, if you guys could all just help me and toss out a couple of ideas, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks Smile
Baker

Well, don't shoot me, but the first thing I thought of was "Popular" from Wicked...
jazzygirlsings

Honestly, it's a different song for different people.

It all depends on your personality. If you find a song that you just click with and you really connect to it, it doesn't matter what the song is (it could even be a ballad)...you will get noticed! UNLESS IT'S OVERDONE!!! (Like the one mentioned above...Every girl will be singing that, I can assure you!)

Honestly, any song you use in an audition is a "Get Noticed" song!
smartguy

I disagree..."Defying Gravity" or "No Good Deed" from Wicked, along with "Seasons of Love" from RENT, "Hold On" from the Secret Garden, and "We Go Together" from Grease.

You disagree with what? It was worded a bit strangely...I'm gonna guess that you disagree with my overdone songs comment...

If a song is overdone, it doesn't matter if you sing and act the heck out of it, the MD and casting team (I know because I've been on the other side of the table)...will tune you out! Not even consciously, but more subconsciously. Part of it shows that you haven't done your homework because everyone else is doing the "newest latest thing"...and part of it is because it gets really hard to listen and watch person after person doing the exact same song over and over...It's like a strange version of hell...LOL!
Bianca.

As to all of the overdone things.. I have to say, that's exactly what I'm NOT looking for. I want something that is different, and will distinguish me from all of the other performers.

I said a 'get noticed' song.. because I'd like it to be a big, show-off-y, jazzy, overly performable song, as I think that's my greatest attribute. I'm looking for something that I can completely and totally 'sell'
Something along the lines of like, 'All that Jazz', just, minus the obnoxiously overdone thing..

Thanks so much for the responses so quickly, And I have to say 'popular' is pretty close to the STYLE of song I'm looking for.. despite the fact that I wouldn't ever touch it with a 10-foot pole..

This isn't for a particular show, it's for a theatre competition, that will be done in an American Idol-esque manner, so it's got to be a song that won't bore the crap out of the audience.

Thanks again guys, More suggestions are ALWAYS welcome. Laughing
highkick49

well taking a hint from what you said download "La Jazz Hot" I think that's the name of it. If someone could correct me if I'm wrong I'd appreciate it. A girl from my theatre group did it for competition and everyone loved it. I think you could work it.

"La Jazz Hot" made me think of the song "I Want to Go to Hollywood," from Grand Hotel-- lots of potential for showing off and selling it. It doesn't have a ton of range or anything, but that song is all about personality, and it sounds like that's what you're looking for.

Oooh! perfect. THAT's what I'm trying to say.
Something with alot of personality.

Is 'La Jazz Hot' from a musical?
The song I choose has to be a showtune. Sad

Thanks again, again, guys! keep them coming!

"I Want to Go to Hollywood" is a great acting song and you can choreograph a wonderful Charleston in the song! But you're right...it's not very rangy...but does it need to be? Probably not that important...ESPECIALLY if you belt the heck out of the last section!

"La Jazz Hot" is from Victor, Victoria...there are some other great songs from that score...

Take a look also at "Steel Pier"...Perhaps something from "Seussical" could work well as a lot of those songs are over the top with personality..."Thoroughly Modern Millie"...though that may be overdone..."The Fantasticks"...

Yeah...those shows should keep you busy! LOL!

I would say do something they've NEVER heard before. That's definitely attention getting.

I know for my opera auditions, I have tons of success when I whip out my aria from "Nixon in China." This opera is under 10 years old, weird as hell, d rarely performed, but very critically acclaimed. It is a life saver for me, cuz my voice isn't that attention-getting! However, my song choices are! You know it's a good choice when you mention you have the song, and the CD's eyebrows go up and they repeat the name of the song back to you with a ? at the end. (I take that as a good sign.)

So go for lesser known musicals. You could start by researching well-known composers' lesser known pieces. For example, R&H's "Allegro" has a really neat alto song called "The Gentleman is a Dope." (I owe that suggestion to Salome.) Sondheim's "Evening Primrose" has 2 or 3 songs sung by a girl that are just stunning and a little bit haunting.

So yeah. Go hunting. Obscurity is good. Some people say obscurity is bad and those musicals are flops/obscure for a reason, but I disagree. Politics has so much to do with the success of a musical. You can still find amazing music in flops/obscure musicals.

STOP LISTENING TO THAT B-TCH OF A VOICE TEACHER! DON'T LET HER GET YOU DOWN!!!!

The more I hear what that woman has said to you, the more it sounds like the psycho teacher I originally had from Juilliard...Imagine what would have happened, had I believed she was the top authority on voice...

PM ME, so I can yell at you... Wink
broadway_baby416

OUT TONIGHT!!! if you can pull of that song and really work the stage, that is the PERFECT song for you!!!

im a really sweet soprano, though--what attention-getting songs are there for a sweet soprano who cant belt to save her life?

thanks in advance!
Marcellus

"Look What Happened to Mabel" from Mack & Mabel and "If They Could See Me Now" from Sweet Charity (the latter was overdone 30 years ago but not any more).
Cake_in_Song

I'm not sure if this is slightly overdone, but I love "I Coul Have Danced All Night," from My Fair Lady. It is one of the number one reasons that I am still crying losing Eliza (to a very pedestrian singer, at that). I love the emotional feel, and those G's at the end. It's also a very legit song, so no belting is required (in fact, no belting should be allowed at all).

"Look what happened to Mabel," though I've never heard it, is probably a darn good song to perform. I say this because an acquaintance of mine, who has been performing professionally since she could walk, uses it as her standard audition piece and I trust her choices. Isn't it a somewhat low song? Perhaps for an alto?

What? I'm just being honest! There are plenty of people out there who simply do not have attention-getting voices. I just happen to be someone who can admit it.

And I'm sorta talking about opera auditions. My voice is pretty damn good for musical theater, but there are some things I do that are unnacceptable in opera. For example, MT casting directors probably don't give 2 shits about how I pronounce my "ah" vowels. Opera directors do. And my "ah" vowels over my passagio are train wrecks.

Ah, thank you. It was late 80's, not late 90's.

And congratulations on the new role I see in your signature - is that the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast?
wicked_diva

Are you looking for songs that non-theatre people won't know, or that theatre people won't know? If it's the former, I'd go for Shy.
broadway_baby416

are there any attention-getting songs for legit sopranos? the thing is, most attention-getting songs are really belty and I can't belt at all...

thanks Wink
SlightlyDemure

The most attention grabbing soprano songs I can think of are:

"Vanilla Ice Cream" from She Loves Me

-This is a great character song, so if you have the personality and range for it, I suggest you act the hell out of it. Last I checked, not very many people knew about the musical so it's likely to be a good choice.

"So In Love" from Kiss Me, Kate

-This isn't necessarily a "look at me" song, but it is beautiful and if you feed a lot of expression and passion into it, it has the potential to give goosebumps. It is originally sung as a duet, but many Cole Porter collection books offer it as a female solo.

Hope this helps!

-Sarah

Not many people may know the musical, but they DO know the song...In fact, it is a HUGE NO-NO for auditions! LOL!

I was actually going to use a song that was overdone in an audition because it fit all the criteria of what they were looking for and I told the CD..."I know this song is overdone, but..." and she said (and I quote!) "As long as it's not Vanilla Ice Cream, it should be fine!" LOL! And we ended up having a long conversation about it! LOL!

In a cabaret setting, it would work fine, but I'm just warning you about auditioning with that song!

I do LOVE that musical!

People should know the other songs like the title song and "Will He Like Me"...

I highly recommend checking it out! Smile

I expect an alto can handle it. it was originated by Bernadette Peters. It has a couple of advantages. 1. It starts slow (Mabel sees herself on film and is transfixed, like a deer caught in headlights). It accellerates verse by verse as her enthusiasm grows. The slow start and accelleration would probably be an advantage for the pianist doing sight reading. 2. There is a change in Mabel as it goes along, ending in enthusiastic belt, giving some acting opportunity.

Try to find the CD of Cole Porter's NYMPH ERRANT. "It's Bad For Me" might be right for you.
disneybeauty

song

Just thought I 'd throw my 2 cents in . . .
"Always True To YOu (In My Fashion)" from Kiss Me, Kate can really rock. I have a frined who played Lois/Bianca, and every night she brought the house down with that song. They loved it.
Marcellus

"La Jazz Hot" is from Victor, Victoria...there are some other great songs from that score...

Chicago, Illinois from VV is a great belt song, allows some acting out and I expect would be fine for an alto.
Gwen

OH!
"I'm the bravest individual I have ever met!"
Bravest Individual from Sweet Charity!
I don't know if it'll work (it might,) but it's really catchy and not overdone.
jazzygirlsings

"I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today" from Avenue Q! THAT'S A SONG THAT WILL GET YOU NOTICED! LOL! Wink
Marcellus

"Welcome to Holiday Inn" from Seesaw (Coleman and Fields, circa 1973), is full of double entrendres and will get you noticed.
jazzygirlsings

OR "All Wet" from Steel Pier...

OR "The Tennis Song" from City of Angels...

Why am I being so silly? LOL! d'oh!

I do Love that musical as well. I played Ilona Ritter in a local production of it and I don't think I've ever had more fun with a role in my life.

@jazzy: Maybe it's just in my area that it's not overdone then, because my university's audition panel used that as an example of a great audition piece because they said it was rarely done.

However, I can definitely see how it would be an annoying song to have overdone. My goodness, can you imagine hearing several auditioners try to hit that high b-flat in one day? Laughing

I would definitely say it's just in your area that it's not overdone, as EVERY audition book out there lists it in the "overdone songs" list! It really is a shame...

And it's even painful for the people waiting to audition to listen to girls try to hit the last note! LOL! I cringe just thinking about it!

There are other good songs out there...

Thanks for the advice. At least I'll know that when I get to the bigger auditions out of my area. =)
