42nd Street Auditions

Okay. So 42nd Street is my high school musical this fall. Auditions are in late August but for people who are away or something, it's like the first week of school. So I have a while. But the good thing is, if you get call backs and I think most do, you are told the parts you're reading for and you get the script too, to practice I guess.

I'm a junior and my school is huge on dance. Everyone dances, end of story. Perfect show for us. So I can think of a senior girl who'd be a good Dorothy. She's a theater veteran and she's got an alto belt voice but can go high too I think. Good actress too.

There's a few other senior girls that are good but they're great dancers above everything.

I'm a junior this year. I don't want to brag but I guess I can say I'm okay. But before I go on, I'm just going to say that I'd KILL for Peggy Sawyer.

I love the songs and love the way my voice sounds singing her songs. I can act her out pretty well, and I just like the role a lot.

With the dancing, luckily I've been taking dance since I was seven or six or something. Tap's my favorite, but I do ballet and jazz as well. I am probably not the BEST tapper in my school, but I'm pretty good. I was on the local competition dance team through middle school but I got into musical theater so I toned it down.

I have to choose something in the style of the show, and sing an upbeat song that fits the show musically. We're going to have dance auditions as well and acting will just be reading from the script, obviously, and all of this is in front of all the other auditioners PLUS the judges. But that's okay for me...if I really didn't want to I'd be allowed to do it alone but that wouldn't look good so whatever.

Anyone have singing suggestions for Peggy or Peggy + another character(s)? Anyone have a good idea of a backup character(s)? Thanks in advance <3.

Anyone have character list or something with like alto, mezzo, or soprano listings?? Looking everywhere and can't find it. Still want to go for Peggy, just wondering.

Also, audition song is needed.

I think you would make a good Peggy. If you can't get Peggy, maybe try Maggie. Maggie is an alto though. The chorus girls and Peggy are probably your best bet.
Sorry, I'm not good with audition songs at all.

Honestly, I think that "Soprano" is the wrong classification. She stays in the middle range for the entire show...I would call her more of a mezzo/alto...

And personally, I find the character boring, except for the obvious tap skills. They say she should be a triple threat, but honestly the only real things you need are charisma and dancing skills for that part. It is not a difficult role acting or singing-wise...

I have never seen the show. I just copied from Stageagent.Very Happy

I've seen about 5 Peggys, all who've done Bwy or national tours, who've belted every note.

Quarter to Nine is in the basement for Peggy as well as Dorothy.

Thanks a lot, everyone! I'm hoping for Peggy and my other choices include Maggie, Annie, and the other chorus girls. I don't think I have a chance at Dorothy though. I'm almost positive it will go to a senior.

To whoever said it, yeah I would probably belt or do a mix for Peggy if I got it. I can sing soprano, but it's not as loud and strong as my belt. As for alto, I think I can sing "About a Quarter to Nine" it gets a little uncomfortably low but it's just a little challenge.

I'm still in need of an audition song, but I just got this awesome book ... it's got 16 bars of a lot of good audition songs for mezzo belters like me. Do you think "Broadway Baby" from Follies would be good? Suggestions?

Thanks again <3 <3 <3

Anyone agree or disagree with my choice?

It is an overdone song, but as long as you aren't auditioning at a national level it's perfect.

Thanksss. Well, my high school is pretty competitive and stuff but it's mostly based of dancers who can sing. I'd like to really show off my voice and I think the song compliments it well. It also reminds me of how Peggy is like a hopeful, optimistic person for some parts of the show. I don't know - it was just something that popped in my head for her.
