2009 RENT Forum Cast

Hey all SBD has approved of me running a RENT Forum Cast '09. In case you are new to mdn, a forum cast is a selected show composed of mdn members that "audition" for fun. People generally make banners and have "bragging rights" to their specific part. Here are the rules and regulations for auditioning.

There are a few new rules for this specific forum cast, as well as some standard oldies stolen from older forum casts:

1.) Like a real life audition, you will not write which part you are going for. That will be decided by the voters. However, I will have a spot in the resume/questions for which role you would ideally like to play. Meaning, all females are on the ballot for all female parts, and all males are on the ballot for all male parts. I have put the ensemble roles together based on the production I am in.

2.) A photo is required with your "resume". If you are worried about online privacy, please PM me so we can figure something out. Also, a recording is not required, but it recommended. You may record whatever song you like, though a song from RENT might give you a better shot!

3.)A small "resume" must be completely filled out with your audition to be placed on the ballot.

4.)No gender bending.......Yes, Angel is a male role!

5.)No advertisement of voting for parts. This is not an election. If you advertise for votes I will disqualify you from the contest!

6.)There will be understudies for several of the major leads, as well as an ensemble. The person who came in second place for a specific role will receive the understudy part as well as an ensemble.

7.)Auditions start now and will go until next Monday at midnight (9/2Cool Voting will take place for several days after auditions. A new thread or an update will verify the dates for voting

8.)Have fun and good luck! Please audition, the more the merrier!

Awesome Smile I was hoping that one of these would happen soon!
I would like to have my audition up by tonight, but I have only been a member for a couple of weeks and was wondering: Is there an official resume/questionnaire that you would like us to fill out? If so, where can I get it? Thank you!
Pannic

Just my luck - can't get a picture to work on this stupid IMac.
Disney-Bway27

Picture:

Winthrop Paroo, The Music Man
Alan, this is a test
Special Skills: I can lick my elbow. d'oh! But, you know, I don't really have many special skills.
Role(s) you'd like to be considered for: Mark Cohen, but I'll take anything.
Additional Info: After spending a good portion of 2008 fairly obsessed with Rent, I find it an incredibly nostalgic show. I'd love to be in it someday, in which case, I could easily perform any of the roles in it (hell, I could do Angel if you asked me), as I consider myself a fairly versatile performer. While comedic roles are my strong point, I can do really well for the dramatic stuff, too. Smile Happy voting! Best of luck to everyone!

Smile

Edited to include the updated form.

Role(s) you'd like to be considered for: Mark Cohen, but really, I'm up for anything! He's just my ideal role!
Any other information you want MdN to know about you as it pertains to your audition: Well, RENT helped me get into MT (as cliche as that sounds). When I was in 8th grade, I remember singing Seasons of Love for Chorus, going out, buying the RENT cd, and falling in LOVE, and furthermore, getting my FRIENDS into it too. But, overall, Mark and I REALLY relate. Everything about him I can identify with. Being the only one in your group of friends without a sig. other, being detached from everything, and also having a friend (former lover/crush) that you wanna please day and night still. We're practically the same person! Anyways, just have fun voting guys Smile

Role(s) you'd like to be considered for:
Mimi, Maureen, Joanne, whatever. In that order.

Any other information you want MdN to know about you as it pertains to your audition:
So, here's the deal with me and RENT. My high school did it my junior year, and I was cast as swing. The director wanted to give each of the leads a night off every 3 nights so they wouldn't get tired, since we had a pretty long run. Meaning, I had to learn 3 parts and I didn't get any night off. I put Mimi on resumes that I actually have the chance to explain myself, because that girl killed her voice and I played Mimi for half the run. The director said she gave it to me because I was the best, but that was bull (if it was really the case she would have given it to the Maureen.)
Basically, I love RENT, and I felt gypped out of a real part. I LOVED each second of my performance so much, I would love the honor of being cat by you guys in an actual part, not a bullsh!t one.

Special skills (anything useful for this particular show): I have had to perform on tables before so if there was any of that in La Vie Boheme

Role(s) you'd like to be considered for: Roger Davis, Mark Cohen, Angel Dumont Schunard.

Any other information you want MdN to know about you as it pertains to your audition: I have performed Seasons of Love and La Vi Boheme in the Musical Revue but as an emseble. I also performed the song for my 8th grade graduation. *Les Mizery was a musical made up of other exsisting musical songs. That year we did Les Miserables Phantom of the Opera Secret Garden. So for the part of Tom he sang (Title Song), (Music of the Night) as well as Enjolras' part in (One Day More). I was going on because the week before the show, the other actor got sick and I vocally stood in for him until he *got better*, which they lowered every song for him. I did however get to sing a smidge of Defying Gravity. I attend the an Arts High School as a Theatre Major. BTW I have contact lenses if it matters. Thank you all for this oppertunity to audition.

Special skills (anything useful for this particular show): I'm also a house manager.

Role(s) you'd like to be considered for: If you want to cast me - please where ever you see me fit would be wonderful. I'm not sure if anyone has ever plead this case in a virtual audition but can you really put on a show with out a tech crew? I'll be your assistant director/stage manager/running crew! I haven't acted in a very long time - since high school and am more of a techie/admin kind of person.

Any other information you want MdN to know about you as it pertains to your audition: I decided to poke my head into this audition because it was Rent that brought me to this forum almost ten years ago. It was Spring of 2000 and I was taking a writing class where we could write a term paper on any topic we wanted. So I chose to compare reactions to Hair and Rent and upon doing my research on Rent and looking for anecdotes about people leaving the theater I stumbled across this amazing community and haven't left. I'd hate to take a role away from a deserving singer (I did train at WCC but I'm not that great) but will be your props mistress or something just to be involved. Much love to my fellow mdners always Smile

The character of Mark Cohen and I are so similar on so many levels that sometimes I find it off putting but at the same time very conforting that there are others out there with my mind set and feeling of isoloation. Plus I've also ALMOST been cast in the show both in New York and the tours on four seperate occasions!

Almost.

Any other information you want MdN to know about you as it pertains to your audition: So I saw the movie RENT first. I adored it. Then I saw the show... three times. It made my life. It's, to this date, my FAVORITE show. If I had to, I could sing and act out (with complete accurate stage directions) the ENTIRE show. I was called back for Maureen at a community theater my freshman year, but the part went to a senior instead. I was depressed. I know I may be kind of young for the show but I would die of happiness if I were cast <3 thanks!!

Emmy if you aren't going to post a video you don't need to say anything about singing anything.

Christina what does the little face mean?
Elphaba22

I think she's referring to the fact that Mimi isn't in Take Me or Leave Me.

Role(s) you'd like to be considered for: Roger Davis

Any other information you want MdN to know about you as it pertains to your audition:
Having the look I do and the vocals that I do, I have always played the Romantic lead or Comedic Relief. I have never played a role such as Roger. Roger's whole outlook on life, trying to write one song that is good enough to his standards, a new years resolution to write a song within a year, and he accomplishes it. Which is where I relate. Ive never been a junkee, but When I put my mind to something, and want it bad enough and to achieve it, I will do anything to accomplish that goal. Which is who Roger is. He sets a goal, and he achieves it no matter the lengths he has to go to, to make it a reality. I would love the challenge of Roger. Thanks! =]

Voice Part (SATB): Baritone

Age (optional): 17

Height/Build (optional): Skinny build and average height

List previous roles:

*Ahem* Right, well...

Ensemble - Anything Goes

...yeah, that's it >.>

Audition song (optional): Hmm, trouble is I've got a pretty bad throat at present and only really have a headset microphone on this PC anyway. So, even though it has no real relevance to musical theatre, I'm going to have to post this recording of myself singing 'Hallelujah' by Leonard Cohen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wik9ssOqfo&feature=channel_page ...skip to the 2.15 mark if you wish to make this fair and only judge based on a snippet.

Special skills (anything useful for this particular show): I can play piano, I can play guitar, I can rap (as much use as that's probably going to be...), I write lyrics (which proves I can commit to work Wink) and I'd be absolutely comfortable with homosexual intimacy.

Ooh, I'm in an ethnic minority group and New York is a racially and culturally-diverse city! Does that count as an advantage? Razz

And I...speak fluent Spanish? Confused Yeah, Danny, you must be making a grade A impression so far, lol.

Role(s) you'd like to be considered for: Absolutely anything

Any other information you want MdN to know about you as it pertains to your audition: I suppose here would be the place to admit that I realise this is a crappy audition and am only doing this out of MdN community spirit. Truth be told, I'd consider myself lucky just to make the ensemble. Razz

Oh, and as insignificant as that Ensemble role in Anything Goes may have been, I *did* give several people I knew in the audience the impression that my character was going to be revealed to be Snake-Eyes in the second act over the course of the run. I may have been little more than background filler, but my acting still managed to make me distinguished. Wink

I love it too (well, if I recorded myself singing it, chances are I don't hate it Razz ), but I must confess that the sheer amount of times it's been covered in the last 25 years or so is rather staggering...God only knows how much Cohen has made out of royalties just from that one song...

Here's a little bit of Anytime by William Finn for my audition. Would've done Over the Moon, but I'm in my dorm. That's why I'm really awkward in the vid, I'm listening to see if anyone's saying to shut up! Smile
Also, as a side note, my tonsils are swollen, and I just finished a performance of my freshman showcase.

^ I can hear the tonsil issues, but your voice still shines through. Colourful tone and round, full vibrato...and as has been said to you many times on here, you're also incredibly pretty.

...I envy you so much right now. Smile Wink

All I seem to have in my favour by comparison is a Trilby... Razz

P.S. Guys, I just put my audition song for Mark up, it's the opening of La Vie Boheme. It's on my audition page, but if you don't wanna go back to page one and look, here it is:

Just hit "download". And I know it's rather shaky, trust me, but I'm losing my voice honestly. It's the best I could do for now. I hope you guys enjoy despite that, though Smile

Must... remember.. post.....audition...song... gah! Shocked
chrisrocks14

Okay guys, I am really glad that I thought to do this before the deadline. I posted my audition form a while back and now I finally have an audition song..of sorts. I don't have any good recording devices to use, so I figured that I would have to just skip submitting an audition song. But then I remembered one video of me singing that's already on Youtube, so that's the one I'm going to go with (coincidentally, the song is from Rent). This is from my high school's choir concert last year, when we sang "Finale B: No Day But Today". I am the one singing the solo at the beginning of it. I know it's short, but I hope it counts for something. Thanks everyone!

Also, just jump ahead to 0:40 seconds. There was some technical difficulty, and the singing doesn't start until then

I really hope this isnt too late!!!

I edited my post from before with my audition song video;

It's a bit rushed to be honest, and not my best, but I thought I'd give it a shot Smile

^ I like it. Lots of attitude. Wink Sound recording could be better, but hey, we could have far worse to judge on.

If you don't mind me saying so, I'd say you're also rather attractive. Razz
