13 People?I'm auditioning for EVITA next week.
The director/producer has said that this will be a "small cast" production of the show. She has also cast HERSELF as Eva and her husband as Che.  I HAD made it clear to her that I was going for Che... but, now I'll be auditioning for Magaldi.
Her cast is calling for 13 people. At first glance, I don't think she really knows the show to well. I can't see this working... well.

About 8-9 Aristrocrats
Children (5?)
I mean, this musical calls for a big cast. Having seen the Harold Prince version.
When I audition, I'm going to do so as if my life depended on it.
What do you guys think? Can EVITA be done on a small scale?

Theoretically... I guess. It can be done without the children's choir. You could do it with maybe 6 soldiers and 5 aristrocrats.
But it just doesn't seem right to me. Less than 9 soldiers really forces a lot of other choices, and too few aristrocrats and it gets super unbalanced.

firstly...what a diva to cast herself in the lead when she doesn't even know what amazing talent may audition.
also...evita with 13 seems bound for disaster...it's a play about the play, so it seems that it'd be nice to have...people...in it.

Okay, I talked to her about this and she explained it all to me:
She is playing Eva and her husband is playing Che. They are the owners of the company and the theatre in which we are rehearsing and performing the show.
They have plans to start a family and she said that this would be the last oppertunity to play a lead oppisite her husband for the next few years.
The comany specializes in "small cast" productions. The theatre only site 180 people and the stage is very small (and round). It doubles as a cinema nand a children's theatre workshop. They own these comanies as well.
Amazingly, the small cast (three leads and now 16 swings) seems to be working out well. We all have to play about 16 roles per night. So, it'll be interesting to see how cues will work and costume changes.
I totally understand why they are doing it the way they are. I didn't get it at first, but they understood my concerns.
In certain rehearsals, they have let me sing Magaldi, Che and Peron when they were not present.
They're good people and hard working. This should be fun.
We open next month for three weeks.
